Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.

The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.

The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.

The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.

In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.

"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."

The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.

The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

Re: Plane missing with 236 people on board

BTW - all of this info is readily available.

And they have made countless documentaries on the crash.

And this crash was the first time that the authorities were starting to question the effectiveness of the black box as a beacon because it was such an unusual (or so it seemed at the time) accident.

On 16 May 2011, Le Figaro reported that the BEA investigators had ruled out an aircraft malfunction as the cause of the crash, according to preliminary information extracted from the Flight Data Recorder.[149] The following day, the BEA issued a press release explicitly describing the Le Figaro report as a "sensationalist publication of non-validated information". They stated that no conclusions had yet been made, that investigations were continuing, and that no interim report was expected before the summer.[150] On 18 May the head of the investigation clarified this contradictory information, stating that no major malfunction of the aircraft had been found so far in the data from the flight data recorder, but that minor malfunctions had not yet been ruled out.[151]

On 27 May 2011, the BEA released a short factual report of the findings from the data recorders without any conclusions....

Before and after the publication of the final report by the BEA in July 2012, there were many independent analyses and expert opinions published in the media about the cause of the accident....

On 16 September 2012, Channel 4 (UK) presented Fatal Flight 447: Chaos in the Cockpit, which showed data from the black boxes including an in-depth re-enactment. It was produced by Minnow Films.

....I am sure I read somewhere where there were many minutes of the black box recording-before the fatal crash of this French flight-that was not available/missing. I will keep looking for this info.

It was 1.4 seconds of missing data.

And I'm not sure what you are trying to say with the wiki C&P?

Re: Plane missing with 236 people on board

INAM you are correct, operational and cockpit voice information were all available for crash analysis for the Air France incident,   447 Audio    The aircraft did not actually "nosedive" but virtually powerstalled all the way down,  hitting the water in almost a flying attitude,  having descended at around 10,000 fpm for 4 minutes while the crew were unable to  appreciate,  and thus correct,  the situation that had developed as a result of a frozen pitot tube (air speed indication) resulting in the flight computer disengaging.

In Today's Technological age a signal from a planes black box is easy to locate.... I suggest you research instead of  blindly posting information you do not understand.

The ultrasonic transmitter is a small self contained device with  its own battery supply designed to operate for a minimum of 30 days automatically when immersed . The power output is limited by the size of the beacon and allows in good conditions a range of around 4-5 km. Put simply for you that means a suitably equipped search vessel must be  virtually overhead to "hear" the beacon, and if the water is deep  detectors must be lowered beneath the surface,  or installed on deep sea submersibles.  All this is only if you know the approximate position of the crash site which nobody does P007, so the signal is not easy to locate unless you know within a km or so where it  is.

I am concerned that those with the expertise and best equipment are not actively in control i.e the USA

For you P007,  the Air France Flight 447 'black box" , the ultrasonic beacon is the white tube at the bottom left. Cockpit voice data and aircraft  performance/operational data were all recorded, not missing.

no link? to your pretty pic?....not very scientific.

and ..."Cockpit voice data and aircraft  performance/operational data were all recorded, not missing."

Errr no, not true.....various reports state that there was a section/s of the cockpit voice recordings 'missing' from the black box data from the French plane Air France Flight 447 on June 1st 2009 that was tragically lost along with its passengers and crew .....even ineedamartini agrees on this. Ineedamartini states that over 1 sec is missing....and I said that I have read somewhere recently that there was a reported several minutes worth missing.

As I said earlier in one of my posts:

"...'funny' how the search parties were instructed to suddenly start searching in the complete opposite direction-other side of Malaysia in fact(!) to where the planes last known location was..........convenient for 'some' perhaps?"

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/12/world/asia/malaysia-jet.html?_r=0

Confusion Over Planeโ€™s Route Frustrates Families and Search

SEPANG, Malaysia โ€” Malaysian authorities now believe that a jetliner missing since Saturday may have radically changed course around the time that it lost contact with ground controllers, news that added to the air of confusion and disarray surrounding the investigation and search operation. But they gave conflicting accounts of the apparent course change and of what may have happened afterward.

As criticism mounted of the Malaysian authoritiesโ€™ inability to find any trace of the jet, the officials have repeatedly insisted that they were doing their best to solve the mystery of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, with scarce data and almost no precedent. Yet the government and the airline have also released imprecise, incomplete and sometimes inaccurate information, with civilian officials sometimes contradicting military leaders.

False Leads Set Back Search for Malaysian JetMARCH 10, 2014

On Tuesday, three days after the plane disappeared while on an overnight flight to Beijing, the countryโ€™s air force chief, Gen. Rodzali Daud, was quoted in a Malaysian newspaper as saying the military received signals on Saturday that after the aircraft stopped communicating with ground controllers, it turned from heading northeast to heading west, lowered its altitude and flew hundreds of miles across Peninsular Malaysia and out over the Strait of Malacca before the tracking went blank...."

"..Without specifying why, the Malaysian authorities vastly expanded the search area to the west on Monday, implying that they believed there was a strong chance the plane had traveled there. No similar expansion was made to the east or the south...."

strange: a scenario could be......'someone' with something to 'hide' located 'something' in or around the last known location in the Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea.....so to prevent the search parties from 'seeing' what had been 'found' and subsequently 'gathered as classified evidence' the official command to all search parties was to change course and search in the opposite direction for a bit -in the Strait of Malacca was far enough away.....then they were called back later to resume searching same area and a widened area.

just a scenario Smiley Wink
