Please find another time for Protest

If you're fighting to protect people's lives, why not start by not risking the innocent lives of everyone elses. Find another time. I will have more respect for you. I was just saying the other day: Thank God that Australians aren't as crazy as Americans and we have at least some common sense not to choose this time to protest.

Excuse my ignorance, why are they presenting George Floyd as some sort of a hero. I get the policeman was corrupt and deserving of punishment and floyd didn't deserve to die. Couldn't the protestors have chosen someone more deserving?

It''s not that George Floyd is being touted as some kind of hero, it''s just that he is the latest victim of exteme police brutality and has become the symbol of the outcry against this type of brutality. Many victims of other crimes have been the symbol of an issue whether it's a rape victim, victim of gross corruption, cancer victim etc.. Obviously Floyd's profile has been elevated. The  killings of African Americans at the hands of police is one of America's greatest  evil shames.  Another great shame is when a non law enforcement person who is of another ethnicity is insufficiently punished for killing an African American.

Let's look at the killing of George Floyd. Here we have a man with his knee on the neck of a handcuffed human being. The cop has his weight bearing down on the neck of a shackled man. This goes deep into the subconcious of many people. This could be seen as a modern-day lynching! When "Negros"  ((as th ey were called back in the day or something worse)) were the victims lynching . SSo when an African American was lynched the rope was usually around his neck. Where was cop  Derek Chauvin's knee?

I don't say racism doesn't exist. it clearly does but the issue is more an American one. If you want facts and perspective. If black lives matter. The movement should be targeting the entire black community. Blacks kill other blacks in crazy number. almost 90% of blacks being killed are committed by other blacks. Why are they not educating other blacks that black lives matter??? Alternatively, hazard to guess who kills white people more??? Ever checked the percentage of blacks committing violent crimes vs the percentage of blacks in the American community. The solution is, black live matters only if blacks cared enough about their own community.

The blacks are clearly discriminated and treated poorly in society. They need to start treating themselves and each other better for things to get better.

Is the Op the same bob who enjoys the buffets in Las Vegas? The Casinos are opening back up next week.

Hi TCM, sorry I missed your post. Yes, Wynn has excellent buffets.

Sorry if I'm bagging Americans. I think they're some of the nicest people in the world, but they can also be incredibly reckless at the same time.

The peoples have had enough, what about the killing of that aussie woman? The American police force needs a complete overhaul & they been saying it for years!

She did not get shot because she was white; she got shot because 2 poorly trained rookies got startled when she walked to their car from back, and slapped the car with her hand, startling the trigger happy cops.  They both pulled their guns, one fired.

That is very different scenario to the 9 minutes killing of handcuffed and not resisting George Floyd that the whole world watched.  It is totally irrelevant that he was a petty criminal with drug history.  He did not deserve to die.  The reason why his killing sparked such response was not because of what sort of person he was; that is NOT what it is about.  It is about 4 men who killed another human being in broad daylight, in front of witnesses filming it, and obviously did not think it will be a problem.  And there is no guarantee they will be actually punished.

So you are assuming those 4 thugs were properly "trained"?

You should not need training to know that 3 men kneeling on somebody's back and neck for close to 9 minutes stopping them from breathing is likely to kill them.  The last 2 minutes George was unresponsive, the people standing around were shouting at the cops that he is not breathing, but they continued kneeling on him.  They should have been trying to resuscitate him. They killed a man who posed no danger to them.

Muhammad Noor shot at figure that suddenly appeared next to their car, and he was immediately doing his best to keep Justine alive.  There is a recording of his partner calling for help while Muhammad is calling out he cannot get her to breath (or something along that line).   There were at that time some cases of police being called out to some deserted places and then attacked.  They were in dark lane and could have easily been about to be shot.

Are you really unable to see the difference?  In any case, Muhammad Noor has been charged and sentenced.  Most white cops who kill people are not even charged.  Even civilians, like the 2 guys who shot the black jogger were not charged until recently, and only after big public campaign.

Re: Please find another time for Protest

'course i see the difference

But, my point was missed

Approximately 1,000 killings by police each year, homicides; arest related deaths - Why?. and a minority of it doesn't get reported to the media

A lousy system - that's why

And armed citizens doesn't help matters either, it seems the police are perfectly in their rights to shoot first and ask questions later

Signatures suck.

This discussion about the risks of coronavirus from a protest gathering would carry so much more weight if it had also happened last week following the antivax and G5 marches.

Where have you been? Of course a lot of people who saw those marches on TV were annoyed at the marchers & for the very same reason. It is a bad time to be taking extra risks.

It's not just about the causes, it is about the timing.

Although, having said that. I don't think the anti vax crowd has anywhere near the popular support of the BLM crowd.

What suprises me in some ways is it is as if people haven't got a creative brain in their heads. The USA has riots & marches, so we follow suit. There are other ways to support a cause, it doesn't have to be by a march. I'd say one of the mosr effective ways is by badgering politicians & via the ballot box. With social media, it is perfectly possible to start a ball rolling in that way.

Change takes organisation & planning & an orchestrated campaign. But you've got to be very clear what changes you actually want made.

Funny no one mentioned this when the White guys with the guns protested against lock  down with out masks and distance.

Gee where in Australia did this happen? I must have missed that one. Seeing as black people in America count for 25% of all those killed by police, the protest should be that "all lives matter"  Australians who don't wish to be killed by Coronavirus should matter also. The protesters in Australia have put the lives of us all at risk, not to mention the future of this country. When the outbreaks start because of these marches, and the country locks down yet again, and the hospitals are overwhelmed and everyone is out of work, people are dying in droves and others commiting suicide, will the protesters feel any guilt for being the cause of it all?  We are in the middle of a Pandemic, and nothing can justify mass gatherings like we have seen across the country, that will potentially cause many many more deaths. This issue should have been dealt with in a different manner. The health and well being of an entire nation should be paramount.
