Rich Blasted For C-Section "Epidemic"

THE UN’s World Health Organisation has warned that too many women in developing and wealthy countries are resorting unnecessarily to caesarean sections to give birth.

Other pregnant women with a real medical need for a C-section simply do not have access to the operation, the WHO added.

“In a lot of developing and developed countries, there is really an epidemic of caesarean sections, even when there is no medical need,” said Marleen Temmerman, director of the WHO’s reproductive health department.

In countries like Brazil, where some 53 per cent of births are by C-section according to WHO figures, “there is a culture of ‘let’s go for caesarean’,” Temmerman added.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, almost one in three babies were born via caesarean section in 2011.

Rates have risen sharply in Australia over the past two decades - from 18 percent in 1991 to 32 percent in 2011.

Entire Artcle Here

C-sections should only be considered in cases of risk to the mother and her unborn child.

I question the ethics of a Surgeon who engages in this type of surgery, simply for cosmetic reasons or to fit in with an agenda.

yes, I know personally several who, from the moment they decided to have a baby, decided they will have c-section, and nobody could talk them out of it.  One was just too frightened of the pain, the others did not want to get damaged down there.  A friend who is an obstetrician tells me that there are many women who are just adamant they want c-section.

It's pathetic to attack the messenger.

What makes you think that having unnecessary c-section is not important? There is plenty of evidence that natural birth is beneficial for the baby.

yes, there is.

i don't understand why any mother

would choose to have an elective

c-section.

Caesarean section births 'increase the risk of autism by 23%', study finds

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/caesarean-section-births-inc...

WOMEN who experience difficult births or deliver their babies by caesarean section are more likely to have an autistic child than women who had normal births, according to the largest study of its kind ever undertaken.

http://www.autismtoday.com/library-back/Autism_More_Likely_in_C-sections%20.htm

During a vaginal delivery, muscles involved in the process are more likely to squeeze out fluid found in a newborn's lungs, Bryant said, which is a benefit because it makes babies less likely to suffer breathing problems at birth. Babies born vaginally also receive an early dose of good bacteria as they travel through their mother's birth canal, which may boost their immune systems and protect their intestinal tracts.

Babies born by Caesarean section may be more likely to have breathing problems at birth and even during childhood, such as asthma. They may also be at greater risk for stillbirth.

Plus allergies, plus more illnesses, plus a funny shaped head.

A sterile baby equals very low immunity.

To have an elective c-section it has to be organised (and therefore recommended) by a doctor meaning he/she has decided that it is in the best interests of the mother and baby already - whatever those interests are.

I'm not saying that at all - in fact I know women who have asked their doctors for a c-section because of fear of pain or whatever.

But a doctor can refuse to do it (and I don't know any who have), and the patient can go elsewhere, or they can agree to the patient's wishes and then the c-section by default becomes recommended.

There is no process where that decision is judged by anyone else.

As I said before, the system we have does not call the doctor's decision into question.

For most Drs/specialists that wouldn't get you a c-section would it? A pregnant women simply stating her personal preference is not to have a vaginal delivery - without any health concerns relating to having one?

it obviously does happen - those women

who can afford it - to pay for a c-section based

on personal choice for no other reason than simply

not wanting to go through natural birth.

Re: Rich Blasted For C-Section "Epidemic"

How could a doctor's decision  to perform a c-section be judged by anyone else? Who would judge it? Another Dr, Specialist? Why would their opinion overule another fully qualified medical practiioner?

Yes, I know it does happen, which is  what the topic of the thread is about.  It is not a given though.. if a pregnant woman sees a Dr/specialist and says she only wants a c-section, they can say No, won't do it . As mentioned above, the woman can then go to other Dr/specialists to see if they will do it.

So personal choice, doesn't mean it will be granted.

A very good example.

Trying to do the right thing but still in the poo !

i felt ripped off that i couldn't have a normal delivery, but i didn't blame the dr - i blamed myself.

i am eternally grateful to the dr who I have to thank for my daughter being alive.

Many of the other mums who had been through a long labour would say to me 'oh you cheated, you got it easy'
they didn't mean anything bad by it but it did stick with me, I think a lot of c section mums feel similar.

It's the fact the UN is telling people what they should do.

Next they will be telling women they can't have abortions.

what's wrong with that?

parents need to have a good understanding

re the risks to the babies associated with c-sections.

Everyone I know who had a c-section did not make that choice as a whim.  They would all have preferred to have been able to safely deliver the child naturally.

but this is about those women who prefer not

to deliver naturally.

That's just cruel, to say such a thing.

My daughter would have loved a natural birth but is so grateful that the doctors were able to save the baby and her by surgically delivering the baby.

There is no measure of difference though when all elective C-Sections are included in the count.

What is the percentage of those who opt for a c-section for cosmetic reasons?
