Today I am ashamed to be a Queenslander.
I'm not.. I am not going to be ashamed for something that a random kid did.
I would be ashamed if it was my kid... but not someone elses..

No, it shows that teenagers these days will do any stupid thing to get youtube hits or be on the news. Fifteen minutes of fame.
What the aftermath does show is how some adults choose to make these things political.

Do you think it was designed to take the shine off the Autism Queensland Centre in Sunnybank, where Ms Gillard and Premier Campbell Newman were signing the National Disability Insurance Scheme agreement -

And Crikey... an iPad is not a laptop... so that is not what we are talking about..
and on the subject of bringing your own device.. that can be a really bad idea... for several reasons but the main ones are security, you need to make sure all devices are fully protected and also the programs the school actually uses are often paid for and not allowed to be put on personal devices...
John Howard had an idea... if you spent money on a laptop he would give it back to you at tax time.. I liked that idea... But Rudd said he would just give all kids a laptop because lots of families could not afford the upfront payment... But you are not actually given the laptop... you have to hire it out at our school.. costs me $150 per year.. and we give it back when he leaves..
*shrugs*
iPad/laptop = portable device = interchangeable - I asked if it were possible that the schools whose kids didn't get a laptop to take home implemented some kind of program similar to what ours did with the funds, meaning that perhaps the funds were distributed, but the schools chose a different way to use them.
Some of the reasons put forth for the decision at our school was that owning the device did not guarantee that the child would bring it to school. It did not guarantee that if it got broken it would get fixed. School looked at the big picture in how to set up a system that used the advances in technology. Even if every child had received the laptop our infrastructure did not enable every child to use them at school. (It was even assessed how many recharging stations would be needed)
BYOD program is into it's third year now and is working well *shrugs* The IT team checked out every device entered into the program before allowing it access to the intranet system and they are all serviced/ inspected (I think it is 3 times a year, but I am not sure) and if broken in the interim are able to be turned in for repair to the IT team. They have regular inspections of the BYOD devices and inapropriate material is removed and child is disciplined. (somehow Rhianna music I downloaded onto my iPad, got onto one of my kids (iCloud?) we thought we had deleted it, but at inspection it had come back, so he got detention for inappropriate material *blushes*)
I don't think the programs are on the devices, they are logged into and accessed through the electronic whiteboard system and school intranet.
It's a program that is working well according to reports and as far as I can tell.
*shrugs*
