I know of a woman who had stones thrown at her in a mainly Muslim country.  She had on a bikini.  Only one guess as to which nationality she was by showing such disrespect.

By this example, aren't you confirming that women are in mainly Muslim countries do not have a choice with regard to dress code?

This woman you know of showed disrespect to Islam law and was stoned for it.

Don't you think people should respect our laws as well, if the burqa were to be banned here?

As for the rigorous defence for the laws of our country and our western culture, where's the respect for our culture and country when this garb is worn here, young women on beaches are spat on and called sluts by ME muslims which ignited the Cronulla riot?

As for "anecdotal argument" is that the same as the "Sophie" letter Rudd read out at the Copenhagen conference? to looks of sheer bemusement and incredibility.

Defending the wearing and use of this garment is spitting in the face of freedom for all women and bowing down men who kill women like dogs on a street.

the garment represents freedom of choice within this country

This country gives them freedom of choice but there's Austalian law, and then there's the word of the Prophet, Islam law. Which does not give devout Muslim women the choice to go into public places uncovered.

The country they happen to be residing in is immaterial.

If the burqa is used to conceal weapons or identity in this country, then it should be banned to be worn in public in this country.

The quoran only states that women AND MEN dress modestly.(As does the Bible by the way)

And as I mentioned above, many islamic faiths have shed their head coverings. Just as many have shed the burqa for the hijab over the last 70 years. In much the same way that Western women started showing their ankles by the 1920s and their knees by the 1960's and their breasts by the 1970's...even though the Bible still makes it clear we are supposed to be dressing modestly and appropriately. Gees, according to the Bible any woman who has worn jeans (considered mens clothes) is on a straight path to hell lol!!

Agree, why do many on here feel the need to attack our way of life, our culture, in defence of the burqa and all that it represents.

Can someone please explain why the laws of another country (laws that go beyond religion) are brought in as an argument against a garment of clothing women can choose to wear in Australia?

There are no laws requiring women to wear coverings in this country. We do not have stonings in this country.

It's just irrelevent to bring in the subjugation of women in some other country as somehow a reason to bring in laws in this country.

True. The proposed banning of wearing burqas in this country is not because we don't want Muslim women to wear them. It's because we don't want radicals or terrorists to enter or leave this country by concealing their identitly underneath them.

Particularly when we are tallking about so few women who actually wear something as 'confronting' as a burqa. What can it possibley be? 2000 women as an over estimate?

do you have any instances of where this has happened here?  imo they would stand out like a sore thumb amongst our population. I know it does happen in countries where they all wear burqas

the Bostom bombers had backpacks didn't they? not "clothing of concealment?

Why are you defending this garment and all it represents to women? or don't you understand the argument? are you defending it because you don't know any better and that "women" are making a "choice" to wear it? if so then I suggest you do a bit of reading and educate yourself as to what dehumanizing women means.

If we had a PM who was a muslim would we accept her wearing the full burqa in parliament? I think not.

I lived through the riots micasheen and saw first hand (actually right outside my living rom window) the events that took place that weekend and the lead up. Were you there?

Women were not spat on. In fact the opposite- the Cronulla riots began when a couple of stupid boofheaded life savers decided to confront a small group of Middle Eastern men that we now know were not doing anything other than spending the day at the beach.

That incident was talked up into a frenzy by Alan Jones who was riding the anti-Muslim sentiment due to the gang rapes that had recently occurred.

I was born and bred in Cronulla and the only racism I ever saw in 40 odd years was directed at those that the locals saw as 'Westies' - ie, anyone who was not blonde and blue eyed. That racism was prevelent on the beach and also by police at junctions on the Taren Point Bridge. The latter I know because my brother was stopped numerous times in his 20s and told "to turn around and go back to Bankstown where he belongs". Umm, his drivers license shows his address as Cronulla...
