So Much For The Right To Freedom Of Speech

Much has been made of "Freedom of Speech" and "Freedom of Expression in light of the Charlie Hebdo attack. Yet we do not practice what we preach, it seems.

VICTORIA’S Health Minister has asked organisers of a conference featuring anti-vaccination speakers to reconsider their “irresponsible” event to protect children.

The March 1 conference covers topics such as “vaccination risks, benefits and alternatives”.

Oh and... before anyone starts... I am not anti-vaccine, but I do believe the risks are worth considering.

And many other children's disorders such as SIDS, ADHD and allergies have arisen in their place. If parents want to investigate whether vaccinations are precursors to such disorders, they should have every right to do so and make up their own minds.

Yes, but we have a pretty good idea why that is happening.  Lots of research has been done in that area.  It starts with rise in C-sections, as babies born that way lack some bacteria, which they normally pick up on the way out.  Then there is breast feeding, or lack of it, and over cleaning which leaves the baby without contact with germs as well.  Research shows that kids that are in close contact with animals, especial kids from farms, have lower incidents of allergies.  And there is an exposure to various chemical in our houses, and newer they and the furnishings are, worse it is.  In other words kids' immune system is under lot of pressure.

Now you're talking.  Sterile babies emerging, instead of babies already immune.

The burgeoning of allergies and early illness follows exactly the burgeoning of of C sections, Australia has the highest rate, I believe.  About 25%?  Appalling.

Please give us the name of this law.

How come the guy from overseas who wanted to speak about how to chat up girls, had his visa cancelled and he wasn't able to do his speaking?

Why didn't ' your law' allow him to speak here?

Because he was deemed to be of bad character**

Dr Tenpenny has had  no criminal convictions and is of reputable character, so no reason to deny her a visa, or deny her right to speak or deny ppl the right to hear what she has to say.

I have to go now happy to continue this discussion when I can get back online later

**No, public objected to the content of his presentation/seminar. He has no criminal convictions.  Why didn't your freedom of speech law allow him to stay?  Same as for Dr Tenpenny. - public object to the content of her presentations. A child not being immunised could lead to his/her death from many serious diseases which we have immunisations for to prevent this.

Which law says Dr Tenpenny must be allowed to speak in Australia? Considering there is no 'freedom of speech' law here?

What if she has her visa cancelled? Then she won't be here to give a speech. Best option.

Australia does not have explicit freedom of speech in any constitutional or statutory declaration of rights, with the exception of political speech which is protected from criminal prosecution at common law.

"Freedom of Speech" is a misnomer.  In the United States, as per the Constitution, freedom of speech may not be constrained by governmental entities, with a few exceptions.  However, a private venue, even one receiving government funding, has the right to deny a venue.  One can stand on a streetcorner, screaming a message through a bullhorn, but step on my or any other individual's property, that freedom of speech doesn't exist.

Wrong country to be banging on about rights and freedoms. Do some research Australia doesn't have a bill of rights or any constitutional freedom of speech. Australia was founded as a penal colony and isn't that far removed from one today

In Australia we have:

What is the right to freedom of opinion and expression?

The right to freedom of opinion is the right to hold opinions without interference, and cannot be subject to any exception or restriction.

The right to freedom of expression extends to any medium, including written and oral communications, the media, public protest, broadcasting, artistic works and commercial advertising. The right is not absolute. It carries with it special responsibilities, and may be restricted on several grounds. For example, restrictions could relate to filtering access to certain internet sites, the urging of violence or the classification of artistic material.

This is what we do have. Note the red text. This I posted in this thread before, so  I am still interested to know what law icy keeps referring to which she claims would give this US woman (in particular) rights to freedom of speech in Australia.

Repeat also:

Australia does not have explicit freedom of speech in any constitutional or statutory declaration of rights, with the exception of political speech which is protected from criminal prosecution at common law.

She does not have the moral right to spread her lies and complete fabrications   to influence vulnerable young mothers.

She is a criminal and I hope they ban her from spreading her lies here.

What do you mean by "in their place?"  Are you suggesting that SIDS, ADHD and allergies did not exist before the advent of vaccinations?

Does she have criminal convictions in the US? If not, then she is not a criminal.

If any person entering Australia legally, has criminal convictions they are vetted upon entry to Australia anyway, and can be refused entry.

Any parents.. not just young mothers.
