I have just heard that an unknown source bought fake twitter followers to follow Tony Abbott... 

The LNP have said they did not do this and are in the process of having those accounts removed. They are also making investigations as to who was behind this. 

The LNP do not spend money that has been donated by people in good faith on buying social media likes and followers.

They are spending money on getting fb likes. That's what the ads are for.

Why would anyone in Labor pay for Abbott likes or followers?

His boost on twitter is probably because it's election time and he would come up as a suggestion to follow.

Fake Twitter followers for Tony Abbott being investigated by Liberal Party

THE Liberal Party is investigating the purchase of fake followers of Tony Abbott on Twitter.

There has been an explosion in the Opposition Leader's follower numbers on the popular social media platform.

His handle is @tonyabbottmhr.

A statement posted on the Liberal Party of Australia Facebook page at 11.59am today said: "The Liberal Party has become aware that someone last night began buying Fake Twitter followers for Tony Abbott's Twitter account.''

"We are working with Twitter now to remove the fake accounts and investigate who was behind this. The Liberal Party has not purchased or artificially sought to inflate any social media numbers."

A spokeswoman for Coalition campaign headquarters confirmed the party was investigating.

What ever caused it The Libs have a paid twitter campaign running at the moment. Asking for retweets (and by default, followers). If you have a look at the feed Tony Abbott features prominently.  

He might just be the victim of his own trending.
