Taking mock compassion too far.

Ok we have had the "Poor Illegal Refugee" the "Poor Dole Bludger" the "Poor whatever" thread so now what about the "Poor Self Inflicted Addict" thread.

We may as well add them to the taxpayers  burden as well. We can cater for their "special needs" out of the bottomless pit of our national debt.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Define agonising pain.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

So they are introducing a greater problem to alleviate a smaller one.

Like getting into a vehicle that they know that the wheels will drop off, the brakes fail, no steering, and heading for the edge of a cliff with the doors unable to be opened, just so that they don't have to walk in the rain.

Does that make any sense?

of course it makes no sense to those incapable of compassion for fellow humans.

Meaning that it makes sense to you?

You are the one claiming compassion

Nova, do you really think that all junkies are suffering excruciating pain and that is why they take drugs??

I am not referring to the chronically ill and infirmed, I refer to the general junkie who takes drugs so that they can escape reality rather than face up to it.

What gives you the impression that I am gloating? Is stating facts gloating in your understanding?

It is true that I hold some people in contempt but they are few and far between and richly deserve that contempt.

I guess when it comes to addiction and using, you really can only speak for yourself and your own experiences

i don't claim to be the most compassionate person in the world, nor do I think drugging oneself is the answer to adversity in one's life, but then again pain is relative, what one person can cope with is beyond the ability of another person.

I have experienced pain, but I have never been to the point where drugging myself into oblivion becomes an appealing option, so I hesitate to condemn those who have been there.

I can not even imagine the horror they must have been through to reach that point.

Not every drug user start for that reason, curiosity, wanting to fit in, doing it for kicks - they are the ones I have less compassion for, but I still feel for them, I'm sure they never dreamed it would end in addiction - the good old 'it happens to other people' way of thinking kicks in...

the good old 'it happens to other people'

That is the biggest problem.

But to say that starting on the road to addiction without knowing that there is a very high risk of happening just won't wash, no one can be that stupid. It is a well known fact with lots of evidence and examples of what can and does happen.
