The Appalling Asylum Seeker Conditions

This is disgraceful and I can only hope the people who are in charge fix this asap.

An asylum seeker who was moved off Nauru to give birth is being locked up for 18 hours a day in a detention centre in Brisbane while her week-old baby remains in hospital with respiratory problems.

The case of Latifa, a 31-year-old woman of the persecuted Rohingya people of Myanmar, has shocked churches and refugee advocates.

She was separated from her baby on Sunday, four days after a caesarean delivery, and has since been allowed to visit him only between 10am and 4pm in Brisbane's Mater Hospital. The boy, named Farus, has respiratory problems and needs round-the-clock medical care.

Latifa is confined to the Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation, 20 minutes away, where her husband and two children, four and seven, are being held.

Latifa's husband, Niza, is not allowed to visit the child at all, according to people in daily contact with the family.

August 2013:

Amnesty International has described the conditions as "inhumane". The government says they're temporary but Nauru's Foreign Minister, Kieren Keke, says permanent structures can't be erected until a dispute among landowners is settled. How long that will take is not clear.

This may refer to the 'third camp' they intend/ed to build.

I am getting confused - the riot reports say accommodation blocks, kitchen block and others were burnt down.. so they did have buildings and they are being replaced?

They have both tents and buildings?..not enough accom in buildings so they use tents as well?

An Immigration Department spokeswoman says detainees burned buildings to the ground, including the accommodation blocks, which can house 600 people.

The health centre and the dining room were also destroyed.

The government in Nauru says 80 per cent of the island detention centre's buildings were destroyed in the riot.

I found these interesting. Newsletters from the construction company. One before and one after the riots. They give a good idea of what had already been built and destroyed and what was going to be replaced.

There's nothing since then though and its hard to get an idea of whether any of the rebuilt buildings are being used or whether construction has been halted since the new policy. It does get confusing.

Who is crikey referred to in post 357? I can't see any posts made with that ID.

punch - I am not sure if she did actually contact the media herself...details are scant. Although that does raise a good point, re her asking for more visiting hours etc, she would need a translator present to be able to communciate.

I would hope that translators would be virtually on call.

The whole thing makes me really annoyed with the refugee advocates, although they do some very good work, there is clearly a lot of political point scoring involved too. I would hate to think that this woman wanted more hours and her requests were not passed on just to make a better story of it.

They seem to be most persecuted?

Have you even heard of these people (Rohingya) before reading this story?

Yes, punch, stories like this are used for political point scoring.

Also attacking other posters for the sake of it.

I was going to say to look back, but it has been removed from all posts.  Funny, that.

Re: The Appalling Asylum Seeker Conditions

All the c&p quoted replies on this thread are doing my head in.

I can't understand why it takes so long for asylum seekers to be processed. To me that is a far bigger problem than the original OP. it must be horrific to be in limbo for so long and I actually can't blame those who do for rioting in frustration.

Interestingly after looking up refugees 50 years ago, I saw they rioted and caused damage as well.

No matter what the rules are, I can't call you by your new user name, crikey. I find it bizarre that a member can choose a name which, while not offensive, may have emotive connotations for others, yet you are not allowed to use words like 'seaman' in the correct context in a fertility discussion.

Question re asylum seekers. What happens if their claim for asylum is refused? Do they stay at the camp and keep applying or are they returned to their country of origin?

Polksaladallie, you get a lot of people with unresolved issues or wanting to take advantage of the vulnerable working in the 'caring professions' as well.

Re: The Appalling Asylum Seeker Conditions

We can't really blame the Aust Govt for sending aslyum seekers to Nauru and making them sleep in tents. It was some of the asylum seekers there that started the fires (july 2013)  that burnt down most of the new buildings including the accommodation blocks.

The new kitchen block was only open 2 days before it was destroyed.Smiley Mad

From the Cantstruct links in punch's post:

Prior to the fire and over the last 6 months
Canstruct had constructed and commissioned
11 accommodation buildings (being almost
80% of the total number of accommodation
buildings). These were handed over and
occupied progressively since 28 January 2013.
All the asylum seekers in Nauru had been moved
out of tents and into the new accommodation
buildings. Canstruct had also constructed and
completed a number of new central facilities
including the kitchen, dining hall, recreation
centres, and administrative buildings.
During the riot, all the accommodation buildings
were destroyed and the dining and kitchen
facility was gutted. The administrative facilities
for DIAC, Transfield, IHMS and the Salvos were
completely destroyed.

I think the asylum seekers can keep applying but don't know how many times.  That's why the centres are full up and spilling over.  There must be a way of speeding up the process.

Re your last sentence.  I am aware that some professions attract people with carnal problems, (well, a lot of professions), but would be interested to know what else you know about.  (Genuinely curious).

I'm not sure what your question is, polksaladallie? I can probably tell you more about what I don't know about.
