The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

hello Kaye..hope you're travelling ok.

I remember the chooks for Sunday....Pop used to chop their heads off and hang them on the line by their feet to 'bleed' and Mum would put them in boiling water to get the feathers out, and then gutted them....I can still remember her heaving as she pulled the smellly bowels out of them..

What fun eh?

Oh I remember all that too......after Pa had chopped off the chooks head, they would run around headless.

I use to watch in amazement as my grandmother use to pull the inards out of the chooks.

Maybe that is why I cant eat chicken now:O

O wow Richo, 20 litre drums!!!  Makes me think of the Biggest Loser if anyone watched  that,  but carrying huge drums came into it.  No you definitely don't need a gym:-p

JV gardening is hard work, with all that bending and digging, if I had one I'd be doing the same.

And freshwater you're very active too but be careful of those ladders won't you though I'm sure you know what you're doing.  .

I remember once when I had a house taking it on myself to paint the interior.    a few years ago but not exactly a chicken ....  but after I'd finished it I was as think as a rake.

I'm in a small flat now so no gardens or painting to do, and really have no excuse as I have a X-trainer sitting there.... gathering dust.   😮

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

freshwater - My OH's urologist told him, people over 60 (guessing you are over 60!!), should never climb ladders, so glad to hear you are careful.

Cracker night was a real highlight of the year.  I only got burnt on the hand once for hanging on to a fancy cracker instead of putting it in the ground. Loved those tom thumbs - would light the whole lot at once. Being the only grandchildren, we had lots of crackers, as Dad and my 2 uncles loved them. The barbie to follow was great and then the next morning we would be up early to find the ones that didn't go off.

Watching TV at the electrical store with other people who, like us, couldn't afford a TV of their own, was a cheap night out, as was window shopping on a Summer Friday night. I hate the shopping malls now - I used to love walking along the main road looking at different shops, especially in country towns where the shops were different. Now all shops are the same everywhere. I do like "window shopping" on eBay though!!! :^O

Just a thought about exercise - we did so much walking and bike riding  without a car, didn't need an exercise plan.  Now I'm feeling very lazy 😞

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Hi Kaye, most older people lose some of  their sense of balance, especially if they having hearing problems.

I have great balance and co-ordination and I am very athletic, without one medical problem..  I body surf most days, ride a 1500cc scooter to the local shops, as well as tootling along the freeways with the trucks in  2-seater convertible, and I still ski the black trails at the resorts..

No need to give advice (albeit in kindness) or be concerned about my lifestyle,

Anyway, what a boring life it would be without any element of risk.  My attitude is one of enthusiam and having fun.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Big Hello there from a Generation X'er.

I am loving this thread.  You are all bringing back fond memories for me of my Great Grandmother.  She was the only grandparent I had and she died when I was 8, but I still remember the outside dunny, playing in the woodshed, helping her with the washing in the big copper outside in the laundry room on the back of the house.  (I still have the wooden poker she used to stir the clothes around with)  I remember her roast dinners cooked in a woodfire oven they were the best, always cooked in dripping.  Her cakes and biscuits were delish.  I remember sitting around the open fire with my mum and nana.  My mum playing nana's piano.

I inherited one of her tub chairs from her lounge room and her beautiful dining table and chairs which my family eat dinner at every day, I love that I still have part of her home in mine.

I know things were harder back in her day (She'd be over 100 if she was still alive) but somehow I think things were better back then.  The pace of life was slower and people had time for each other ~ kwim?

Anyway lovely people thank you for this thread  :-x
