Medford cops tasered a youth who had lunged at them with a knife..........because he was wearing a ballistic vest, it had no impact...........the 9mm slug that followed did, though.

When you call the police you expect them to be able to protect you, that is what they do, then the do gooders yell about all the wrong ways of them doing the job we expect them to do!
As I said, if you, or one of yours, are in danger you would want an armed protector, someone to take control and help you, otherwise you may as well save time and yell out to your neighbour who can come over with the baseball bat......or a mobile phone to record the crime!

The alternative is a lot more lethal and permanent.
But you are the type of person who criticise the police for using a firearm to stop someone and
then criticise them for using a taser before having to resort to a firearm.
We could go back to just shooting them !
The problem is not that the tazer is used as an alternative to shooting, it is that in some cases, because it is not considered a lethal weapon, it is used too quickly and often repeatedly when the use of a weapon was not necessary.

From the link in the OP:
"But most spoken to by the ABC felt police had every right to use force on the man.
I take the view that if the police say they're necessary, I would go along with what they think is necessary," a resident said."

No polks, I am a realist, I live in the real world, and wonder what would have become of the rest of the hostages in the lindt cafe, or in paris, or etc, had the armed police gone in waving badges and sprayng pepper spray.
Someone I care about is alive today, because of what some here may call 'excessive force', I choose to call it justice.

That would have broken the ABC's heart to have to report that !

One good outcome does not make it OK to misuse power in other situations. That is not justice.

And one bad outcome does not mean that the police shouldn't use them in most situations or use them correctly.
Your emphasis on "misuse" when most of the time they are used correctly.
But the left are never shy of jumping on the outrage bus at the first opportunity !
