I'm assuming it is okay to post about the different names of everyday things. 

I couldn't remember what the Australians call a valance. It's a pelmet. I just learned that one last year. 

What else?

Pullover sweater- jumper?

cookie-bikkie?

Do you call potato chips-crisps? 

We call rubber sandals-thongs in California. lol. Weirdly enough, we  call those string undies, thongs, too. It can get confusing. 

I once told a Scottish friend that she could borrow my thongs, if she wanted to go to the pool. She gave me a look of horror.

Really? No one uses drip coffee over there? I'm a plain coffee drinker also.....a little almond milk and sometimes a little creamer and I'm good to go. I can't believe the money some of my co-workers spend on their starbucks. $100 a month or more. I just fill up my little old travel mug and bring my own. My parents have a keurig, but they only have one cup a day so it works for them. I had an expensive Braun coffee machine that broke about six months ago. Went out and replaced it with a basic $20 Mr. Coffee and the coffee tastes just as good. I'm happy with both the coffee and the price.

Yep, Starbucks galore in the U.S. I think I've been in a Starbucks less than 5 times in my life. When ordering a coffee takes a masters degree in chemisty, I'm out. I don't want a lot of Milk, froth, caramel, sugar, whoshdeedoodahs, in my coffee. I don't 

I just want a big cup of coffe, with a half a tsp. of sugar, and literally less than a tablespoon of cream. Too much milk or cream, and I gag. I hate when vendors insist on putting cream in my coffee. I can't drink it.

Ginger ale is quite different from ginger beer.  I like both :). Ginger beer would usually be drunk as a soft drink, while ginger ale is usually a mixer e.g., brandy and ginger ale (often just called brandy and dry)

We can get both alcoholic and non-alcoholic ginger beer.

Here's a topical one.  I'm watching The Masters golf atm.  What they are referring to as pine straw we would call pine needles.

I'm not watching the masters, but I have no idea what pine straw might be??? 

Pine needles are those long spiny things that come off my neighbors pine tree, and land all over my lawn, killing it instantly. 

They start off green, and turn brown.  

Pine shavings are used in horse stalls, or some little critter cages .

I had a large flat breaded piece of chicken when I was in Australia. I can't remember what they called it. It was okay.. but not my favorite thing. 

Schnitzel. I just looked it up. 

Okay, I just read that it is sometimes called Schnitty! Now I want to order it... just so I can say, may I have a schnitty please?

Yes Chicken schnitzel, you can have Veal schnizel as well, yummy with salad

Its not common to use creamer in coffee here, or even real cream..

I dont think we dont have Dunkin' Donuts here, though I did see them in NZ..

Lots of 7-11 stores have Krispy Kreme donuts for sale which are very sweet..and Starbucks did try in Aus- but massive fail, having to shut 60 of the 80+ stores they had opened less than 10 years later...unfortunately our cafes are too good!! Especially in Melbourne! 

What about the difference in the names for schooling?

Im in Melbourne, my son went to Kinder at 4 yrs, then started school at 5 in Prep class, then 1st through to 6th Grade which is 

Primary School.

Then High School, Year 7 through to Year 12.

In different states in Aus there are different names, and different ages as well for starting school.

What about in the US?

Starbucks shut Down in NZ as well, just not the sort of coffee we are used to.

I think Melbourne has the nicest food and coffee.
