Thrifting

 Thoughts?

 Yes? No?

What was your best bargain? Or do you avoid thrifting?

Re: Thrifting

A nice pick up this morning--it came into the shop from the back room as i arrived.

A very old HMV square wooden gramophone with metal trumpet.

Same as the repos on here from India-but an original.

Had to pay $16.00 for it ....................................................................................Richo.

Re: Thrifting

Wow that's cool 🙂

I'm resisting the urge to go op shopping at the moment. It's too hard to walk out empty handed...

Re: Thrifting

I know what you mean ....   but at least if you do buy something you haven't broken the bank.

Re: Thrifting

That's true..l

I just find if I go in too often, I usually come out with something. So I would rather go in only once every few weeks and get something I actually want rather than go in every few days and get loads of stuff I don't really need.

I have a round of about 25 oppo-thrift shops a week.

Some are done weekly-others a couple of days-one near home every day.

I have noticed in ..mainly the independents and some chain store operations

with books and mags--anything about the Royal Family is in

glass cases with very high prices.

Other goodies are on the shelves for about a $1.00.

Have a full set of Australian Muscle Car mags and now a near full spare set.

Got an original no 2 last week-for 10 cents.

Have a look on here what they sell for...............................................Richo.

nice one

i stopped collecting but i couldn't resist an ad on gumtree recently. and i haven't got a clue what AMC magz fetch these days, was getting excellent prices for spares on ebay years ago.. a woman advertised boxes of performance car magz for free. when i got home to see what i scored.. i found a full set of AMC magz but missing the first issue. kinda put a smile on my dial. i've still got them including my extra full set i intend to keep. they're a great read.

Signatures suck.

Re: Thrifting

you know, bloke, i think mentioned this before, seems recent to me, i don't get into it....time

yeah, that elusive first issue, car guys want it. i sold reprints of the first few issues too. serious collectors want them as well, coz they're a rarity too. for me as long as i got the lot. my first issue is still unread in as new condition..protected in hard plastic.

that pick came with perth street car, aussie street rodding etc, ive got good run from the first issue of those as well [got heaps, too much]

lol... re; the bikes

Re: Thrifting

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a TV stand from the op-shop that has a cupboard underneath as well as the shelf for the cable box etc.   It looked kind of 'dry' but there were no scratches or stress marks anywhere.

I polished it several times with wood oil and after the third time, it just 'glowed' beautifully coming back to the original grain.

Turns out, it's blackwood and well constructed with dove (dovetail?)  joinery .. solid wood throughout.

Not bad for $40, and now we've put brass wheels on it, it's the bees knees ....  Smiley Very Happy
