MAVERICK LNP backbencher Jason Woodforth will call on his parliamentary colleagues to "open their minds" and allow a medicinal cannabis trial in Queensland. The Nudgee MP, who famously lobbied the party room to rid the state's water supplies of fluoride said he would use the first party room meeting back, expected to be held on February 10, to put his case."I will be lobbying for a trial," Mr Woodforth said. "It's time we opened up our minds and listened and did something about it."Bodybuilding MP advocates eating naked in front of mirrorMr Woodforth said he was moved to take a stand after reading the story of epileptic eight-year-old Tara O'Connell's recovery in The Sunday Mail.Would you support a medicinal cannabis trial? Tell us below.Doctors had told Tara's family she would be lucky to make it to the age of nine but her mother Cheri said her health improved dramatically after Tara was treated with medicinal cannabis sourced from Nimbin. The family is now treating Tara's older brother Sean's epilepsy using the liquid from of medicinal cannabis as well.Mr Woodforth said he not advocating to legalise cannabis but rather to trial the use of a medicinal version like the one used by the O'Connell family.Eight-year-old Tara O'Connell administers medical cannabis to treat her epilepsy. Picture: News Limited. Source: News Limited"What I wasn't aware of ... is that there's two types of cannabis. There's the medicinal and there's the bit that gets you high," he said."The people who know about it don't want the high. They want the medicinal because they know what it does. Let's explore this."Mr Woodforth said he was incensed the Federal Health Department had issued a response highlighting the illegality of cannabis rather than one saying they would investigate Tara O'Connell's recovery further."Why aren't we saying ... let's have a look at this, let's explore, let's research," he said. "But no, we just want to go and shoot it down. This madness has to stop. We can't just sit on our hands and say 'no, it's a fluke" because its not. There's lots of incidents in the US where people have been cured of things like cancer. As politicians we need to have an open mind and listen. Too often we don't."A spokeswoman for Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said the Minister was not considering such a trial but Mr Woodforth said he would lobby his colleagues in a bid to change their minds. He said he also planned to lobby the LNP party room to consider a referendum on daylight saving.

Cannabis proponent Dr Andrew Katelaris shared with Real News Australia some little known facts about the cannabis plant:Cannabis hemp is humanity’s oldest cultivated crop. In the nineteenth century hemp was the most cultivated crop on Earth and hemp fibre the most traded commodity.Cannabis was made illegal in the united states in 1937, by a consortium of corrupt police, bankers and the Dupont chemical company, to allow the synthetic nylon to gain market dominance.Cannabis produces the world’s most durable natural fibre.Hemp is very beneficial agronomically. It is a hardy, self mulching weed smother crop which conditions the soil, resulting in enhanced yields in following crops.
Cannabis hemp produces the safest of all pharmacologically active substances, with no deaths ever having been attributed to its use.Despite strident claims to the contrary recent evidence has established it amongst the world’s most broadly acting medical substances, with marked activity against spacticity and seizure disorders, chronic pain, inflammatory bowel disease and a host of other ailments, often where all other medication has failed.Published evidence has now established that cannabis has a profound anticancer effect across many tumour types, with no associated toxicity. The National Institute of Health conducted research intending to prove that smoking cannabis caused respiratory disease and lung cancer, but finally published the data that it was protective against both.
“There’s literally dozens and dozens of medicinal uses for cannabis. We’re crazy not to give it a go”, said Mr Woodforth. “There’s countless examples of it helping people with all sorts of ailments even curing cancer”. While he doesn’t advocate legalising the plant so that anyone can get hold of it to smoke and get high, he whole-heartedly supports utilising it for it’s healing and overall health attributes.

PREMIER Campbell Newman has called on federal health authorities to investigate the possible trial of medicinal cannabis.Mr Newman yesterday said he had an open mind on the issue and would like to see its use explored.Related: Time for medicine to go to pot"I am perfectly prepared to accept that hemp has potential to create drugs or treatments that might have a medical benefit for people," he said."I believe this is something the Therapeutic Goods Administration or the National Health and Medical Research Council should be looking at."Mr Newman said patients were treated daily in hospitals with drugs derived from opium, which also makes heroin. His comments come after maverick LNP backbencher Jason Woodforth called on his parliamentary colleagues to back such a trial following a case in Victoria where a young epileptic girl made a miraculous recovery after her mother treated her with medicinal cannabis sourced from Nimbin.Yesterday, Mr Woodforth welcomed Mr Newman's support and said he hoped more of his colleagues would be of the same mind when he raised the issue at next month's LNP party room meeting."An open mind is exactly what us politicians should have," Mr Woodforth said."I'll certainly be raising it in the party room, talking to MPs and saying: 'Look, what's your thoughts?' "Mr Woodforth said some of his colleagues had contacted him yesterday after he went public with his plan to push for a trial and described the reaction as "overwhelmingly positive".Mr Newman said he did not have a problem with his backbencher raising the issue but ultimately it was not a call for the state."It's not for us in Queensland to make a call on this, it's for those national bodies," the Premier said. referenced from: http://www.news.com.au/national/queensland/campbell-newman-gets-behind-medicinal-pot/story-fnii5v6w-...
