Today, the 700th illegal boat arrived under Labor’s watch

The latest arrival of two vessels carrying 157 people takes the total number of illegal boats that have arrived on Labor’s watch past 700.

Over 42,000 people have arrived on 701 boats since the Rudd-Gillard Government dismantled the Howard Government’s border protection regime.

Labor’s decision to dismantle the Howard Government’s policies has put our country’s security at risk.

It has cost hundreds of lives lost at sea and resulted in thousands of people entering our communities without rigorous security checks.

Every illegal boat arrival cost Australians $12.8 million (on average) – and that’s money which could otherwise go to fund hospitals, roads and help repay debt.

It has seen border protection cost blowouts of more than $10 billion for a system that does not work – that’s money which could otherwise fund hospitals, roads and help repay debt.

Labor’s mismanagement has also included the detention of a convicted jihadist terrorist in low security family accommodation at Inverbrackie in South Australia.

This jihadist was a member of the terrorist organisation Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which merged with al Qaeda in 2001, many years before his arrival by boat.

With an average of 100 people now arriving every day, Australia cannot afford three more years of Labor failure.

I agree Deb.

World peace and an end to poverty may solve the need ...failing that , just letting as many who want to come come may solve the issue of people trying to make the journey in dangerous boats ...I doubt that solution would please the OP though.

So instead of standing and shouting at those who can do who are doing I would like to ask the shouters what can be done ?

Shame on those who make it political?????

Hello....it is politcal,  a political decision which has ended in tragedy perpetrated by Labor.

A monumental stuff up that has seen over 40.000 "refugees" pay to get here & pay $15.000 per head to do so after traversing through many countries with passports & ID papers then to pay a smuggler to get them here under a "I'm a refugee" guise.

They are tutored in what to say to get refugee status. Just what kind of fools do the Labor party take us for?? all the BH on here should take a good look at what is happening & stop condoning this to protect their beloved labor party.

I can't wait to see what TA does, he says it's going to be difficult but doable & I believe him. Gillard & the Labor party have given up, gave up years ago when they lost control.

This is a tragedy of gigantic proportions & we are being taken for fools by criminals.

re #168

I haven't looked at it all closely yet. What I do notice is a difference in terminology when TA is referring to boat arrivals under the Howard government to the terminology used for the same under this Government .

People smugglers is  involved too ... are they all people smugglers or are some carrying people who have a legal right to seek asylum in our Country 'humanitarians' ? .

An Australian caught trying to take drugs into Bali could face the death penalty .It is what he/she is carrying that is illegal .We don't have the death penalty for anything and what is being carried on asylum seekers boats (people seeking asylum) is not illegal cargo.

How does TA plan to lean toward not assuming genuine refugees where people on boats are claiming asylum without paperwork ? Does he want the Navy to assess asylum status on the boats ?

The story is that the Conservatives will put it out that "anybody " coming here by boat without documents who have traversed many other countries to get here will not be accepted.

Myth 3: The recent rise in asylum seekers arriving by boat is due to the recent reforms to our refugee policies

Historically, Australia's refugee trends follow global trends. In 2001, for example, when Australia experienced a peak in the number of boat arrivals, so did the rest of the world. Then global asylum seeker numbers dropped markedly in the next five years to 2006 (asylum applications in all industrialized countries fell by 49% over this period[ix]) - as did asylum applications in Australia.

Since September 2008, Australia has seen a rise in the number of asylum seekers arriving by boat. This is because global asylum seeker numbers have increased significantly. For example, between 2007 and 2008 asylum seeker numbers rose by 122% in Italy, 121% in Norway, 89% in the Netherlands, 70% in Turkey, 53% in Switzerland, 30% in Canada and 20% in France. Yet in the same period, Australia saw only a 19% increase.

The reason for the global increase in refugees is the continuing violence in countries like Sri Lanka, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Sudan. In other words, an increased number or intensity of worldwide push factors have forced a larger number of refugees from their homes.
