Hi I bought my daughter a car 3 months ago paid the stamp duty remembered the 4th june it expired.  Had so much on my mind and never got a renewal bill and just remembered today.  Dam my daughter drove right into the city.  Obviously these cameras picked it up being one day late.  My daughter just paid it then.  Do you have to go to court anymore?  Poor kid she has been hours studying with exams coming now shes stressed she has to go to court.  And how much does it cost?  Do you only lose your licence for a few days.  She is on her p's.  The car is under my name so I suppose I will get the fine.  5 yrs ago I never got my renewal and had to go to court I was unreg for 2 months I don't know how I didn't think of it being so long since the last time I paid.  Would you get in trouble a lot more if its your second time.  DAM 1 day im kicking myself

Can I ask, crikey, does your son's car have comprehensive insurance or 3rd party property insurance?

I am often stunned that people don't have insurance and think the CTP covers the other person's car in an accident.

both Az. No choice on the 3rd Party, as you know, but elective comprehensive as well. Hope he never has a smash though the excess is HUGE $1650) and we insured as high as possible to get the excess down as low as we could too - so that's not even going for a cheaper option!

Either comprehensive or third party property.

The compulsory third party (CTP) is part of the rego costs and covers other people (not the driver of the car at fault)

I know a young man (not mine) who thought his CTP covers the cars........

I think TPP should be compulsory too.

in Vic the sticker is sent with the renewal making it impossible for joeblow to know if in fact the rego is paid up to date....I doubt you could ring vicroads after hours for any info hard enough trying to get through at the best of times. good tyre thread working lights etc does not constitute a roadworthy car...only a licenced roadworthy machanic after checking it out completely would be able to tell. same goes for insurance....the information is private. I pay by the month via direct debit so no formal comformation other than mybank statements. And to be honest how many are going to demand proof of all that to drive someone home?

that question similar to mine earlier on in this thread ( Would a person borrowing a car think to do a rego check first though?) has been deemed irrelevant by crikey.

In instances like that of the daughter in the OP, no, I don't think kids using their parents car regularly or semi-regularly would think to check the rego is current before driving off.

so, would the OP's daughter need to go to court?  Is it an  automatic court appearance for driving unregistered vehicle in SA?

I don't think the excuse "i just assumed the car was registered" would be good enough defence.

Isn't the knowledge about driving unregistered vehicles required to be able to get a driver's licence any more?  Why don't people know this?

After reading a comment like that its easy to tell some have no idea about cars and why some should have annual inspections.

The good news is dispute SA having generally older cars and no annual inspections the number of crashes that can be blamed on unsafe cars is no higher than any state that do have annual inspections, and the road toll is generally lower,

Inattentive driving would be a far greater contributor and no one can fix stupid
