"We'll all be rooned, said Hanrahan
Before the year is out".
Ever notice how the BOM goes strangely quiet when projected "hottest" / "coldest" / wettest" / "driest / "worst ever" events turn out to be fizzers?
I present programs on communtiy radio, and am required to read weather reports. Lost count of how many times there have been dire warnings which came to nothing. For those in the to-be-affected areas, I hope this is one of those times!

I too heard that it was going to be 'unprecedented' storms and 'uncharted territory'.
It remains to be seen. Bit scary.
But what is coming back to me is a few years back. In 2007 to be exact. And about this exact time of year too. We had massive rain storms and lots of areas flooded. The reason i recall it is my mother was in hospital & I had to find a different way to drive home after visiting.
And parts of my workplace had huge puddles.
Then fast forward to about 2012 but earlier in the year-once in 100 year rains, we were told.
I also remember a couple of times from my youth when the city of Melbourne was flooded out, cars floating around city streets.
Call me cynical but I don't know that heavy rains at this time of year are unprecedented. We'll see soon, I suppose.

I,ve just been out to our remote farm to check the stock water. It was 37 degrees and tropical, so I stayed inside the air conditioned house most of the day. The Grain farmers are very worried as BOM are forcasting up to 100 mm. in the next couple of days. The crops are some of the best for decades out there and the harvesters ran all through the night, trying to reap as much as they could, before the rain spoils the crops.
My Brother still farms out there and has a bit of a problem. He is reaping on a northern property a long distance from his home farms. He hasnt reapt all of his seed yet and the rain could sprout the grain in the standing crop, making it useless for seed ( and not much good for anything else ). It will take a day to move his harvesting equipment south, so he is really stranded on the north property and will be relying on neighbours, to purchase seed for next years crop.
On the bright side, we have already had substantial rains a fortnight ago and if we get another 100 mm. the feed for sheep will be phenominal. Its marginal country within a few km. of Goyders line and near the edge of our inland deserts. It responds incredibly quickly to summer rain.

crop farming in australia is allways man vs nature. if its not drought its flood. the years when it all goes to plan are great but you are allways thinking what will it be this year, rain or no rain.
its been very hot today and the temp has dropped to 25c now, no huge clouds or thunder/lightning yet.

We had a a fairly dramatic lightning storm and a heavy downpour on the farm house last night. The rain was very concentrated as the grain harvester was still able to continue operating on dry crop only 500 metres away. As you mentioned David, the cropping game is a giant gamble. Farmers dont count the money until its in the banks, as even after you grow a great crop, harvest and deliver it to the recieval centre, the international grain trader you sell to can go bankrupt and leave the farmer with nothing.
Like all things its risk and reward. If you have a spare couple of mill to enter the game ( or more likely a rich farming family who will back you ), there can be some serious money to be made. Unfortunately I didnt have family backing and I dont have a spare couple of mill, so I have had to stick to sheep grazing. At least that is more consistent and is having a bit of a purple patch at the moment. I,m just hoping everything holds together so that I can cash in over the next 18 months after 3-4 years setting the whole show up.
