More than 400 Victorians face having their car registration suspended if they fail to replace their faulty Takata airbags.
The move from the Andrews Government follows multiple attempts from vehicle manufacturers to contact affected owners, including letters, calls, emails and doorknocking.
There have been 29 reported deaths - including one in Australia - and more than 320 injuries worldwide from faulty Takata airbag inflators, which can shoot particles at deadly speeds when deployed in an accident.
More than 3.4 million airbags have been replaced free of charge in 2.8 million cars in Australia as part of compulsory recall efforts going back to 2013, but thousands are believed to still remain on the roads.
In Victoria that number is at least 400, including in certain Honda, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Mazda and Lexus models manufactured between 2001 and 2004.
"We don’t want to suspend or cancel anybody’s registration, but we will do whatever is necessary to get these potentially deadly airbags off our roads,” Road Safety Minister Jaala Pulford said.
People with the faulty airbags will receive letters again this week giving them a time frame to have them replaced at no cost by authorised brand dealers.
If the directions are not followed, the registrations for those vehicles will be suspended.
The government has opted to avoid fines because of the socio-economic status of many of those affected.

I don't push the car but it doesn't pull to one side on power.
It does feel like it floats a little up front when powering up like most front wheel drives.
It's East West mount so I don't know if that makes a difference.
Joz, yeah the Cima looks like a very comfy ride.
That's what I like about the S80, just so relaxing to drive.

That's awfully cheap if there's nothing wrong with the car
The one i looked at over here had slightly less kms, i couldn't fault it other than it really needed a all over paint job
from $7,800 reduced to $6,000 it still wasn't worth it compared to "national" listings
Seeings my guy is no longer with us, i would have to pay top dollar for paint ($4,500?!)
