Weed - should it be legal?

Uruguay has just changed its legislation and is now the first country in the wrold to sanction the growing, selling and smoking of marijuana.

They have done it to put the illegal drug trade and drug traffikers out of business.

Personally I think it makes sense. If nicotine is legal than there is very little difference between the 2.

Your thoughts?

Most prescription pain killers will sell illegally for a lot higher amount than was paid the the original prescription so to legalise another drug because you think that it will get rid of criminal activity around that drug just won't work. There is no proof that anything legal is well controlled,

No. It messes with people's minds.

Alcohol messes with people's mind amongst other things, shall we ban those too?

Re: Weed - should it be legal?

I heard on the radio the other day that in a recent blitz in Melbourne there were a lot of drivers caught that were under the influence of drugs. Gee I wish I remembered the figure, it was quite high, maybe like 1 in 10 drivers tested.

It lead me to wonder what the penalty is? Does anyone know?

And what do they test for, is it just cannibis?

Probably!

I dont think its any kind of argument to say there are already bad things that are legal, why not marijuana. Next it will be marijuanas legal, why not heroin.

Quoting the article:

Decriminalisation of all drug possession by Portugal in 2001 is held up as a success for reducing drug violence while not increasing drug use.

You are quoting about drug violence which is what the emergency services have to deal with everyday and night, I am talking about an industry built around obtaining and distributing drugs. Two completely different issues.

Re: Weed - should it be legal?

Governments of all persuaions have failed dismally dealing with the illegal drug trade but that should not mean that the best way to deal with failure is to make another drug legal. We have enough problems with the drugs that are already legal so why would I ever believe any govenment will do it properly if they legalised weed?

If your'e talking about alcohol and nicotine, gambling even,  I would certainly be in favour of it being restricted.
