They have a great rail system to access too. Down here there isn't even an adequate bus service to use for the journey. 

As the distance one can travel in 90 minutes is further also it would probably cost more in vehicle expenses.

How do they measure the 90minutes travel time?  Those areas you mention are hardly what most people consider to be the regional areas for the pruposes of these discussions.  It's easy to travel from outer areas that are linked by the urban railway systems and freeways.

fruit picking is usually done by the same people.........strawberries for instance....same pickers yr in yr out, same goes for  apples, apricots etc.

Backpackers are used also...........

I use to pick apples, my cousins kids use to go fruit picking every yr as well.

Where do you get they fly in people?

The focus is short term...and money not people focused .

How does it make sense to anyone that our own Country's needy are being acceptably portrayed (in some cases) as ripping their own Country off.

Most fruit picking orchards have regulars, my brother in law for one, plus whole families go to Mildura and surrounds and do fruit picking.

Might be different where you live.

I can't be sure our Government will act in our best interests any more than you can be sure they won't, of course.

certainly what we've seen from past governments and their open border policies, it looks like this one is upholding the tradition, sadly.

But I'm not going to get into a debate with you about it on this thread.

The OP asked for Welfare Reform suggestions, and I responded with mine. You can agree with my suggestion (which actually was not my own, but one I'd heard on the news this morning) or not, it's entirely up to you.

I heard on the news this morning ppl who decline a job they live further than 90 mins away from will no longer be eligible for the dole.

There's a start.

Thats just wrong IMO.  Why should anyone have to travel that far to work? Thats over 3 hours a day just in travel time. It's not fair on families to put that kind of pressure onto parents especially when alot of people become unemployed because the business they were previously working for has gone broke or downsized or whatever.  And who as am employer feels comfortable having an employee working for them that has to travel an hour and a half to get to work.  If it were me I'd employ the local applicant every time, it's just safer imo. 

Where does the idea that "all people on benefits are just bludgers that dont want to work" come from. All of the unemployed people  I know really want work. Have you applied for any jobs recently Icy? Gone are the days of ringing up employers and arranging an interview or time to meet and hand your resume to them in person.  Nearly every advertised job these days is email your resume to ........ so you take the time to email these employers for them to never even get back to you that they have recieved it let alone a phone call to let you know that you werent successful.

No, seeing I'm due for retirement in the next few years. If I were younger, maybe. I'd look for something closer to home as my travelling time is a 2 hour round trip every day. That's on a traffic trouble-free day. If there's an accident or breakdown somewhere it can be much longer.

Luckily I travel against the traffic. I feel sorry for the ppl sitting in traffic to their city jobs. I'm sure their travelling time is much longer than mine.

Plenty of ppl do it.
