What do you think of this idea?

Asian Nannies at half the price.

An no, it's not an April Fools joke, that articles are dated 29/3.

The cost of childcare has been a political bugbear for more than a decade. But a submission to a crucial government inquiry into childcare has come up with a novel solution: low-cost Asian nannies.

The Indonesia Institute, a Perth-based think tank, says carers from countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines should be allowed to come to Australia and mind children for $200 a week to help ease pressure on family budgets.

Families would provide their Asian child carers with accommodation, clothing and medical insurance. The nannies would also be entitled to Sundays off and a return airfare home for two weeks each year.

Women should stay at home and care for their own children, at least until they're school age.

Why the definitive statement that women should stay home until the children go to school then?

Because even in our "enlightened" times it's still the woman who shoulders most of the child-nurturing and home duties. Seeing the woman is the one needing to have a certain amount of time off to give birth, it's a natural progression.

Certainly some couples swap roles (apart from the birthing 🙂 )  and if it works for them that's to be applauded.

Either way, if child-care centre costs are rising and positions becoming scarcer, it'd end up being just as cost-effective for one of the parents to stay home. Usually the one whose wage is the lower.

Or we create more child care placements as the demand increases.

But will they be affordable?

It's just as likely she might be just plain old fashioned with a sexist edge.

nah.

I actually went to wriote a comment about it not being the 1950's, but then I know Icy (just from here) and she's been on the boards to know you're supposed to quantify everything and put a million disclaimers and ifs/whens/incases etc in.

I bet she just forgot

I just came back from lunch with friends................. there was a woman in the group who has 6 children aged 3 to 18yo  and does not work outside the home. She "thinks she might be pregnant again"

Her 2 youngest go to daycare  😮  3 days a week so she can have a break.

I was gob smacked into silence. (and good manners dictate that I make no comment) as her "partner" is in and out of the prison system regularly and doesn't live with her (tradie), she gets a pension.

I am not envious............ and she isn't my friend but really?? free childcare?

I didn't have childcare when I was a stay at home mum and if it was available, I would not have used it?

Its possible the kids are considered "at risk" to get free childcare.

My sisters 2 youngest started going to childcare when she left her abusive partner. They didnt need to, she doesnt work, but their home life was so screwed up previously that they need some normalcy, routine and socialising. You can get extra funding if kids are considered at risk, or short term extra help for certain circumstances.

Generally though, even those on a pension have to pay something like $20 per child per day.
