What is Your immediate Reaction.

A CATHOLIC priest has reportedly told a primary school mass in Melbourne’s west Jill Meagher would not have been murdered if she had not been out so late.

Jill Meagher was raped and murdered while walking home after leaving a Brunswick pub at about 1.30am in September, 2012. According to reports, the priest made the comments to staff and students on Friday morning at St Christopher’s Primary School in Airport West while holding up Bayley’s picture in Friday’s newspaper and talking about murder and rape.

Re: What is Your immediate Reaction.

My immediate reactions is to repeat what joono said:

that Adrian Bayley wouldn't have been a murdering rapist scumbag if his faith had been stronger and he was at home in bed

Why do we always blame the victim?  Why shouldn't anyone be able to be safe walking anywhere at anytime?

I know that's not the reality, but I think we're asking the wrong questions.

Re: What is Your immediate Reaction.

I live in Brunswick, and wanted to add that at night Sydney Rd is a busy area- even the trams run after midnight, and there are a number of pubs, small bars and restaurants that are open late- some 1am some 3am..and when Jill Meagher was murdered, there were a number of people who came forward and were interviewed because they saw her, as they were walking and driving past her on Sydney Rd.

I wouldnt walk the area at night- and advise my young adult son not to do so..none of his friends do either.

That scumbag- I wont even name him- is an angry, vicious, murdering rapist who doesnt deserve to ever walk free again.

I am OK with my taxes paying for him to be kept away from society.

And I agree the right questions are not being asked- but I wouldnt expect much from the source of the OPs post- the headline is, and I quote:

'catholic priest apologies for comments about about Jill Meagher'

rubbish reporting and editing.

The lesson our society needs to learn is that some people cannot be rehabilitated- they dont deserve 2nd/ 3rd/ 4th etc chances.

And have not come to this conclusion easily, as I wish I could live in a world where bad things didnt happen to innocent people, but that world doesnt exist.

Re: What is Your immediate Reaction.

You know what I don't get is.... why on earth was this made public? It was said in a church to 100 members.
Who would be mean spirited enough to tell it to the media and hurt her family like that?
What the priest said is for his conscience and should have been dealt with within the Church.Imo

.......  anyway we do not know exactly what he said, and the tone of voice ...........   Did he actually use her name?

Of-course, if we never go out without our armed guard, barricade ourselves in our houses with multiple security systems, bars on the windows, and dead locks, we will probably be safe.  Then we die in housefire because we will not be able to get out..............

I don't want to upset anyone, but he has to be correct - logically. It's painfully obvious that eg if I didn't drive to visit my wife in hospital that day, I wouldn't have been booked.
If she was home in bed, she wouldn't have been a target for that piece of chit that attacked her.
How else can you interprete it?
And, now everyone jump on me and tell me she had a right to be out - I KNOW that but you cannot change the logic - if she wasn't there, she wouldn't have been attacked - it's OBVIOUS.

    I agree.... it is logical.

She did have a right to be there..... however, if she wasn't there, she would be alive today.

Re: What is Your immediate Reaction.

Agreed. Its logical. Im not disputing that.

But my reactions to this involves taking the logical meaning, the speaker and the context into account.

Re: What is Your immediate Reaction.

i don't agree that its logical - she had very right to b there doing what she was doing - HE was the one without the right to be there doing what he did, so its victim blaming to say if she wasn't there it wouldn't have happened - its logical to say if HE wasn't there doing what he did she would still be alive.

In hindsight I would say, if she had that choice to make now, she would make a different one.
He was never going to make a different choice

Re: What is Your immediate Reaction.

Agree with you 100% Pepe.

As for it "being made public", anything that is said in public is exactly that .. public.  It was not a private conversation in a room where confidentiality is expected, and there were adults there as well as children in attendance.

The mean spirit that had the potential to hurt the family came from the priest himself who clearly could not control his mouth.  As for "conscience", he should have explored that prior to his little speech.

Garbage. A church service is exactly that. Not a public gathering.
