re:
What is this Ice Task Force going to do?
Nothing. It is just a facade.
You either have to legalise drugs and regulate it / control it / tax it OR bring on the death penalty for drug dealers and 99 year sentences for users.
Police Officers are there to enforce laws, why do we need a Task Force for drugs? Cops should already be enforcing drug laws.
I don't think enforcement is the answer it doesn't work unless you have zero tolerance like Singapore. Our laws are too soft for any real effect that's why we have ice on the streets and who knows what else. We have seen many crimes against the person on the news lately. Today I heard on the radio a woman went to get her walking stick from the back of her car and a man stole her car, he was pretending to help her.
How many times do we see on the 6pm news opportunistic crimes against innocent people? I reckon it's on the news every day. It all stems from drugs. They need money to buy drugs so they assault innocent people, rob shops, break into houses, terrorize innocents so they can get their fix. This is why I think drugs need to be legalised and regulated / taxed OR bring on the death penalty for drug dealers. We can't sit on the fence and hope for the best.
If drugs were legal there would be no reason for druggies to commit crimes to buy drugs.
If drugs were strictly enforced like Singapore - it would be less likely for a violent crime be committed against the person.
Australia continues to sit on the fence. This means more innocents will suffer from violent crime.
From what I can tell I don't see this problem going away anytime soon unless drastic action is taken.

Further to that, Joz, I don't think most methadone programs are actual programs. If they were they would involve more than just a line up and swallow routine. A program requires some structure.
For those with employment that can't take the day off some out of hours classes or group settings of some sort should be available and for those who are unemployed, and who often seem unemployable they need a program to relearn how to function in society and become employable or re-employable.

So which is it? Heroin is okay or not?
Some of you posters are very confusing.

According to what the cops say after big seizures, it's around $800 a gram but apparently the actual street price is more like $500. Australian prices are up to eight times those of other developed countries.
Police love to attach big numbers to their busts. A 200 kg seizure will be valued at what a single gram, or even a tenth of a gram, sells for on the street. Nobody imports 200 kg then sells it by the gram. Everything is cheaper in bulk, including drugs. The big numbers make the police look good but, arguably, also encourage smuggling.
Newspaper reports that the Bali 9 stood to make $8,000,000 from their misguided venture are pure fantasy.

It probably is in some way. What I don't understand is why so many of the so called programs are designed to leave people addicted to methadone for years rather than to reduce the dose and facilitate an environment in which they are able to learn how to live addiction free.

nothing other than a cheaper, easier to access, more potent drug will decrease demand.
