What would it take to stop you getting on a leaky boat?

To me the fear of drowning might stop me, you would have to be extremely desperate wouldn't you?

How nice it would be if the money spent dissuading fit young men from arriving on our shores were to be spent feeding the powerless ones.

And if we did that, how long do you think it would be before some people started whinging that they were an unacceptable burden on our helath and welfare systms and it we had to take refugees why couldn't we take those  that were fit and healthy and able to support themselves?

That is absolutely correct cezm. There are many with money and great education that flee.........so you would have to be extremely desperate to get on a boat just as the poor and destitute are.

if I had the money to 'try' save myself and my family and needed to ...

nothing would stop me getting on a boat....other than death itself

They are increcibly brave people and it is probably one of those questions that is too hard to answer unless you are in their situation.

I don't think I would be brave enough though.

another question...what would make a wealthy person in a safe country turn away and scorn someone who is there knocking on their door seeking refuge from danger ?

Re: What would it take to stop you getting on a leaky boat?

50 or more people getting blown up by suicide bombers every second day-and hundreds more injured-seems like a good incentive to risk your life on a shonky boat. Having all your infrastructure bombed to smithereens by the 'good guys' doesn't help either. I wonder how many Iraqis yearn for the good old days of Saddam Hussein?
Its been reported that Abbotts stop the boats campaign is costing Australian taxpayers over $20 million per week.

the fear of thousands more, millions more behind the person knocking at the door.

Life is a lottery and we are fortunate to be living here.
