What would it take to stop you getting on a leaky boat?

To me the fear of drowning might stop me, you would have to be extremely desperate wouldn't you?

SQNLDR Al Muderis SR, shared his story with the Editor …
‘I’d graduated as a doctor from Baghdad University about two years before
the Hospital shooting – a murderous act that occurred within minutes of the
Iraq military ordering doctors to cut the ears from three bus loads of Iraqi
deserters. The doctor’s murder was simply to get our attention’.
‘Soldiers herded us forward to conduct the heinous act of surgery. A gap
in surveillance enabled some of us to flee the scene. I hid in a toilet block
and lost contact with the others’.
‘I headed for Jordon knowing that Iraqi intelligence officers
may not be far behind’

Its been reported that Abbotts stop the boats campaign is costing Australian taxpayers over $20 million per week.

Does it say why it is costing $20 million and what that money is being spent on?

Among other things there would be costs of the Navy ships which are patrolling our waters.....the crews still have to be paid whether they are stopping the boats or sitting in port twiddling their thumbs.  The ships still have to be kept in order and if they are not patrolling our borders they would probably be out on exercises.

No doubt these expenses are being "blamed" on the Stop the Boats campaign....a bit unfair IMO.

Those expenses would still be there whether we are stopping the boats or not.

Not so, all defence force personel who are deployed get an extra allowance. It is not chicken feed...............

Where can I find those asylum seekers with all that money and housing and cars???? I want to tell the ones I know about it, because they got a raw deal!  poor things had to rely on the local Church to help them, public donations of food and furniture and no car!  How rude!

and meanwhile, the truly desperate, hungry, ill and dying are still languishing in displaced persons camps. They don't have the money to go anywhere, much less head for Australia. How nice it would be if the money spent dissuading fit young men from arriving on our shores were to be spent feeding the powerless ones.

And if we did that, how long do you think it would be before some people started whinging that they were an unacceptable burden on our helath and welfare systms and it we had to take refugees why couldn't we take those  that were fit and healthy and able to support themselves?

why not take refugees that have people prepared to sponsor them out of their own pockets rather than rely on any klind of assistance from the government? ones who won't take jobs from locals etc, ones who wouldn't even be allowed to use the medicare system or public hospitals and schools/universities etc unless they did so as full paying international guests?

that's outrageous spot, how much would it cost to process them instead?

I guess that depends on how long it takes to process them, how many times they can appeal an unfavourable decision, what other services and goods they use/consume whilst awaiting processing and how many times and to what extent they damage or destroy the acommodation provided for them.
