Why did and do they wave and cheer people off when they are going to war?

Does anyone know?

I'm thinking if someone close to me was going to war I would wave and cheer them off (or try to) as I would not know when I'd see them again....if at all.I would want their last memory of me to be a happy one not a teary one.

Depends on the war.

WWI, they pretty much thought it would be all over fairly quickly (no matter when they joined up) so it was seeing the boys off on a great adventure

WWII, it was patriotic that they were going

Wars after..support and encouragement 100%
