He was a prominent liquor retailer in Victoria.
In 1988, Murphy was charged with conspiring to defraud the tax commissioner of $2 million in sales tax and was sentenced to two and half years jail (he served only six months due to failing health), fined $10,000 and forced to repay the sales tax and fines.
