.....Weather bureau climatologist Dr Karl Braganza said Victorians could face another widespread drought. "I think we'll take any rain at the moment," he said.
"If we don't get significant rainfall by next summer, many regions will be experiencing drought conditions. In parts of the Wimmera and Mallee, they're already talking about drought conditions."
Autumn and winter rainfall had been below average for at least the past 15 years, he added.
Victoria has suffered its third-driest six-month period on record, receiving half its average rainfall, while the outer northeast of Melbourne and Goulburn Valley have been at their driest ever, with just 30 per cent average rainfall.
The heat is also tracking into historical levels.
"It's certainly looking like it will be one of the hottest summers on record," Dr Braganza said.
As thirsty communities look to the skies for relief, there are fears parts of Victoria could see almost a year of below-average rainfall.
