Your Say on Gay Marriage

I heard Tony Windsor this morning talking about the idea of a referendum on gay marriage.

Would you vote for or against gay marriage if it was an option in September's election?

I totally respect the ideals of marriage between a man and a woman... I understand how some see it as a religious event that creates a union between the two. 

BUT.. I looked at it like this and my opinion changed for against to for. 

I don't believe in marriage.. I don't mind the idea of a civil union... a commitment ceremony between two people that makes it legally binding for financial and other reasons... I would never get married in a church... 

If I can be united with someone in a civil ceremony and it still be labeled as married then why can't same sex unions? 

If they can sort of make marriage as a huge umbrella that can take under it's wing civil unions, same sex unions and traditional marriage then why not. 

I think people that get married are suckers anyway... lol.. if more people want to tie themselves together in that manner then let them..

But I don't think there should be any discrimination in anything because of sexual orientation.

Same here, although I'm not sure a referendum or plebiscite will achieve anything. I think it would be an invitation to all the bigots to have another hatefest on gays.

Well, that happened in France, but not, I think to a great degree (although even one attack on gays is too many).  

We still haven't heard from the AGAINST voters, have we?

The majority ATM is FOR.  

I think that if we had a referendum, it would be in favour of gay marriage.

anyone on here voting no, would be eaten alive, regardless of what reason they gave, and ESPECIALLY if they were to say "religious reasons"

why would any no voter even attempt to explain??

Well, IDTPA, I'd be interested to KNOW.  The main reason people give is that "a marriage should be between a man and a woman for historical reasons" ... but there have been many marriages between men and women where the spouses have had relationships with others of the same sex ... in other words, people have used marriage to indulge in same sex relationships.
