I remember when news agents had a stand out the front
with Papers under a rock
You took a Paper and left the money on the stand
Now days they would steal the money, the papers and the stand
and throw the rock through the window as they were running away

Both my grandmother and great-grandmother were dressmakers by trade and never used a pattern, working from measurements only. I have my mum's old sewing machine that she bought in 1959, Its still going strong.

I haven't sewn clothes since my grandchildren were very small. Loved making baby and toddler clothes for them and mother and daughter matching dresses when the last one was incubating. Knitted jumpers for them also.
I wouldn't have the patience now to do anything other than mending.

The satisfaction of making my own blouses, the self covered buttons, the correct length sleeves, it was dressmaking. No two of a kind.
Individuality. Classics that never go out of style.

the first dress I ever made I finished the whole thing and just needed to do the hem
I was cutting about 2 inches off the bottom and unknowing was also cutting through the back of the dress at the same time
I was so proud that I had made something so complicated but it all ended in tears and in the bin .
beyond redemption

My DiL sews some of her own clothes. She does a lovely job. I'm not sure who taught her, I've never asked, but I know she does mending and such for her mother so I don't suppose it was her.
