Its just awful that they are messing you around like this, as if its not hard enough for you already.
I'd definitely be checking with an aged care facility, tell them you urgently need respite, he's in hospital and you are having trouble getting help and an assessment, I'm sure they'd be able to give you some good advice.

Do you think, generally speaking, that hospitals or health services are more likely to send an ill person - physical and/or alzheimers related - back to their own home In the short term at least) if they live with another person... that is.. the ill person has someone else to care for them at home?
Where as for a person who is single and lives alone they make more effort to find them an alternative, can't send them home if they can't look after themselves?
I know when my elderly father was ill (physically) the hospital weren't concerned about sending him home for his wife (Mum, 80+ years old) to care for him (as it turned out it was only home for a week then he went back in to hosp and died there).
Whereas when my Mum living alone, (early stages on Alzheimers) had a fall in her own home and her Dr got her 2 weeks respite care in a retirment home from the day she fell.. an assessment was done in those 2 weeks, to see if she was capable of returning to her own home.. which she wasn't and got permanent room there.

Dr. rang today and they want to know can he go into rehab if he's "suitable"....I don't know how they think they can reverse dementia...however..apparrently it's mandatory that rehab be discarded, before ACAT will assess him???? wheels within wheels. It's all very confusing, but Ithink we might be getting somewhere at last.
