Mass slaughter and abuse of racehorses undermines industry's commitment to animal welfare

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-10-18/slaughter-abuse-of-racehorses-undermines-industry-animal-welf...

really makes me wonder about the mentality of those running the 'industry' when they all saw the fallout from the exposure of the greyhound 'industry' and yet did nothing to get their own garden in order!

i couldnt watch after a few minutes of seeing live horses being slaughtered, how have we allowed this?

how have we believed they were finding loving homes for all the 'wastage' from this 'industry' when we knew how many horses were being born every year to feed this 'industry' with new blood?

not after we were exposed to what was happening in the greyhound industry.

As mentioned the racing industry is worth - 10s of 100s of millions.

What is stopping the industry employing Vets to euthanise at abattoirs in an humane manner.

What happens after - the horse doesn't care.

Just one other interesting little nugget to add to the converstation. There is a very good reason horses are not euthanised with a sedative type injection. The sedative / euthanisia drug stays in the animals system after the animal dies until decomposition has occured. If the horses where injected, there would be a small problem with then using the carcase to feed the countries hungry pooches. All of the pooches would also die.....Smiley Surprised

SOOOO because we all want to feed our best friends, doggy cubes or canned mush, horses are killed in the manner they are ( which is the most humane anyway ) If people are genuinely angry about this, for once all of the power resides in the eternally outraged and keyboard warriors hands. Euthanise your pet dogs, never replace them, refuse to buy the end product and the industry will have to close down.

My Mum taught me to pay attention to the opinions of those people whom I think are worthy of listening to. She also taught me to try and ignore those people who, well, just talk rubbish. But she stressed to do so in a dignified way and not allow them to upset me or, they win.

I'm really grateful for her advice.

Very sorry you feel that way bear, but my posts where definitely not intended as a joke. With all of these social issues it pays to follow the money trail and this case there are two. The first is the horse racing industry itself and as mentioned, I don't have any firm position on that, so will leave it up to others.

On the direct issue raised by the doco featured in the OP regards the way horses are treated in the pet food industry, the money trail clearly leads to pet dog owners who pay for the products this industry produces. That is what the ABC documentary focused on ( the use of ex race horses in the pet food industry ) and is the issue I directly addressed. I appreciate it can be very uncomfortable for people to accept they are complicit in the industry as front line consumers of its products, but that is the cold, hard, unpopular truth. The issue is very similar to people complaining about child labour used in the clothing and textile industry while happily wearing Nike runners made by exploited children.

I have never shied away from stating the bleeding obvious, even when it earns the wrath of many on the forums who feel threatened by alternate views which challenge the group concensis and have often had to wear personal vitriol from a few who are seem unable to handle valid questioning of their opinions, but I have never found you to engage in that sort of discourse. While I accept that you ( and most others ) may not agree with me on this issue, I trust you will continue to make your worthwhile contributions to the boards.

Enigmabear, please stay.  This is a topic you can walk away from.  It is upsetting and confronting but just shut it down and stay on the other threads ... Heart .. it would be awful if you left the whole forum .. Smiley Sad

You are a great poster.  You have so much insight and I for one, insist you should stay and keep sharing your thought provoking and wonderful ideas.

I so like the way you think and post, and your sense of humour is exquisite.

The topic will remain relevant, either way.

General reply to all...

Have any posters been involved in the thoroughbred or standarbred industry?

Have any posters been employed in an abbatoir?

I qualify on both counts...50 years with horses & five years in the knocking box weilding a captive bolt pistol.

Happy to answer any questions.

Imo the issue here is a rogue abbatoir & not the assumption that these practices are  widespread....they are not.

Our family has spent over 40 years showing horses....daughter is still doing it.  We trained a number of thoroughbred horses into excellent show horses after they came off the track.

My daughter trained as a Vet Nurse in a practice that had a partner who specialised in horses and was accredited to Randwick Racecourse where his wife was a trainer.

The same daughter worked for a while for Gai Waterhouse as a stablehand until Gai discovered she was an excellent rider and promoted her to warming up horses before trackwork.

She also worked as a security guard at Randwick Racecourse an had free access to the stables.....she never saw anything of concern with the treatment of the horses.

No, we are all too soft hearted for that job....it is too tough for any of us.  I admire anyone who could do that job for more than a day.

My daughter was too soft hearted to do her own horse/pony vaccinations.  She did 20 horses one afternoon but left her own pony for the vet to do.  She was teased about that for years afterwards.

I agree with that assessment.  The footage was shot over a long period of time and there were only a few instances of cruelty. It could well have been just the actions of one employee.

I've worked in an abattoir and I worked for a pet food meat supplier.
The people working in that abattoir are just sick sad sadists.
There's no need to abuse the horses except for their own pleasure
