meals on wheels vs light n easy

ive been getting meals on wheels for many years and although they are fine for a pre prepared frozen meal for a while ive thought they are pretty ordinary.

my meals are/were delivered once a week on a friday lunch time so i had to be home.

my delivery comprised 1 hot meal and 6 frozen meals with deserts.

they would not let me order just the meals so every week i got 7 deserts i threw away, i dont like thawed out deserts. in fact i hardly ever eat desert, if i do its fresh fruit.

the aluminium packs often looked like they had been used for footy practice, all squished and unsealed in places.

but the meals were mostly ok.

some time back i was regularly getting some really nice meals, roast lamb, roast beef, roast pork, chicken snitzel, fish in batter.

but lately its all stews with the occasional fish, roast meal thrown in.

and allways with pumpkin which i dont like.

i dont get any choice as to my meals, its not until they are delivered i find out what i get.

i have no problem with the volunteers delivering the meals they are allways friendly.

so a friend said she was getting 'ligh n easy' meals and said she found them very good.

so i took the plunge and ordered some from light n easy as you can order just one time or regularly there are no ongoing contracts, you order and pay.

i recieved my first order today and i'm impressed by the paching!

they come in a lage polysteyrene box wuth a dry ice bag inside to keep them cold, the box is sealed with tape.

the meals are in perfect order ready to go into my freezer. not damaged at all!

online when ordering i get to choose what meals i want from a huge range! no pot luck here.

if i wanted i could order 7 of the same meal! not that i ever wood with such a large choice.

the delivery is left at my door if i'm not home. not possible with MOW.

so now i'm ready for the taste test, fingers crossed they are as good as they look.

btw, yes MOW is cheaper but when i dont have to buy deserts it works out cheaper.

i only buy main meals.

Re: meals on wheels vs light n easy

I looked at the website.

Too much money for the two of us.

For weight loss, you'd still need will power not to snack anyway.

It's just convenience food.

David, what size is mentioned on the packages?

I can't tell if they're small serves or not.

i agree they are expensive for more than 1 person, particularly if you go for the breakfast lunch and dinner.

if your an ok cook and your cooking for 2 or more i think doing your own thing is much better.

i can afford the dinners only, at 7 for $75 when you buy 14 (so $149 for 14)

i have room for 14 in my freezer.

i can make my own breakfast and lunch but i like a nice hot meal once a day thats not out of a can.

the one i had tonight was 440grams, i considered it a good size for a hungry dave. i didnt feel hungry after. and i eat a lot lol

they all are between 420 and 490 grams.

Re: meals on wheels vs light n easy

I always stop at a little country supermarket and buy a few frozen meals when I go out to our remote properly. There is usually one brand or another on special and I don't often pay more than $5 each for them. Lean cuisine & Healthy choice are the usuals. Maybe a can of soup and a couple of pieces of toast and I have a hearty meal. I wouldn't want to eat the microwave meals every day, as the vegies are not as nice as fresh food, but they certainly do a job.

We do similar and generally have one or two of them per week.

Have a good look and then buy a few that that you think you may eat as they seem to be similar in what's in

them and they would work out at half the price,(or less if on special).

Between us we buy the Lean Cuisine,Healthy Choice and Weight Watchers ones,(I'm fussier then my OH and

only eat a certain few),blush-1.gif

I'm not sure exactly where you are located, but check out Gourmet Meals.com.au, situated on the Gold Coast, all meals are Gluten free and they deliver to several Australian cities, and also stocked in some stores.  Meals are frozen, come in standard and large sizes, reheat in the microwave, 7 to 8 minutes in a 750 watt micro. so, less in a more modern 1000 watt. A  variety of meals and desserts, choose whatever you want. $7 delivery.  I think there is a minimum but it is very low, $40 or so. Meals are great and well priced, in my opinion.

Re: meals on wheels vs light n easy

I just had another idea that might help ring the changes but it would depend on how mobile you are, where you live etc

I know that around our way, all the hotels have senior card discount meals. So if you go for lunch (Mon-Wed) at the one nearest here, it is a 3 course meal for $14. Soup, choice of main meal plus a dessert. Or you can just order a discounted mains if you prefer-think they are around $12.

Obviously it isn't something you'd do every day but if you had a couple of mates who wanted to join you eg once a week or fortnight, it's a chance to catch up for a nice fresh lunch, the serves are big and you don't feel like a mains that night so can have something simple.

I think most hotels would have something similar on offer. One friend of mine regularly attends a hotel where every Wed I think it is, it is parma night $5 for everyone, seniors or not. That's a parma with salad.

your right there are places where you can go and have a nice meal for a reasonable price.

but if your like me and have a problem with being in places with other people ( i have autism) i cant just go have a meal at a pub or whatever, just wont work.

i stay home most of the time and have my life organised to live a happy contented life.

thats why i find MOW and now L&E so good. very little contact face to face with anyone.

once i get my 'system' sorted, every day is very much the same for me.

out of the ordinary can screw me up.

it took years to get settled here after living where we did before for over 30 years in a very secluded spot in the country.

i now have neighbours each side and the back, i have hardly spoken to in the 11 years ive lived here. i dont do conversations. its hello, i'm fine, and im gone.

my brother and his wife life a few doors down from me, i go weeks without talking to them too. not because i hate them, i just dont do idle chat with face to face people. if i need to talk to someone i will, maybe lol

anyway, the delivered meals mean i eat well.

even writing this has made me uncomfortable, hardly ever talk about myself, prefer to talk about Foo or Rosie.

Re: meals on wheels vs light n easy

Thanks for sharing that dave. I had considered calling in one day for a coffee when I was up your way. ( I get up to your area once every couple of years ). Never went through with contacting you though, as I thought the subject of politics might come up. ..........Smiley Wink,             Anyway, take care...........
