meals on wheels vs light n easy

ive been getting meals on wheels for many years and although they are fine for a pre prepared frozen meal for a while ive thought they are pretty ordinary.

my meals are/were delivered once a week on a friday lunch time so i had to be home.

my delivery comprised 1 hot meal and 6 frozen meals with deserts.

they would not let me order just the meals so every week i got 7 deserts i threw away, i dont like thawed out deserts. in fact i hardly ever eat desert, if i do its fresh fruit.

the aluminium packs often looked like they had been used for footy practice, all squished and unsealed in places.

but the meals were mostly ok.

some time back i was regularly getting some really nice meals, roast lamb, roast beef, roast pork, chicken snitzel, fish in batter.

but lately its all stews with the occasional fish, roast meal thrown in.

and allways with pumpkin which i dont like.

i dont get any choice as to my meals, its not until they are delivered i find out what i get.

i have no problem with the volunteers delivering the meals they are allways friendly.

so a friend said she was getting 'ligh n easy' meals and said she found them very good.

so i took the plunge and ordered some from light n easy as you can order just one time or regularly there are no ongoing contracts, you order and pay.

i recieved my first order today and i'm impressed by the paching!

they come in a lage polysteyrene box wuth a dry ice bag inside to keep them cold, the box is sealed with tape.

the meals are in perfect order ready to go into my freezer. not damaged at all!

online when ordering i get to choose what meals i want from a huge range! no pot luck here.

if i wanted i could order 7 of the same meal! not that i ever wood with such a large choice.

the delivery is left at my door if i'm not home. not possible with MOW.

so now i'm ready for the taste test, fingers crossed they are as good as they look.

btw, yes MOW is cheaper but when i dont have to buy deserts it works out cheaper.

i only buy main meals.

Thanks for sharing that dave. I had considered calling in one day for a coffee when I was up your way. ( I get up to your area once every couple of years ). Never went through with contacting you though, as I thought the subject of politics might come up. ..........Smiley Wink,             Anyway, take care...........

yeah, prolly not a good idea LOL

i dont hide the fact i'm 'different' but i dont go around telling everyone why i am the way i am either.

i live a good life, much better since my diagnoses 5 years ago after a life of being the square peg in the round hole all my life.

i take drugs now to control the panic attacks i was having all the time, now its rare. but i also have my daily living sorted, so not often do i have to go new places and do new things. plus i can call on my brother and his wife to help in those situations.

like i said, for over 30 years before dads stroke that forced the selling of the country property and moving here (mostly to be close to my brother and his wife a registered nurse working in aged care) i lived a secluded life.

mum and dad sheilded me from the world.

its good that my sister in law after knowing me a very short time figured me out and got the ball rolling to get me sorted, i had seen doctors before and no one ever mentioned autism. so my brother and SIL took me to all the places and listened to me tell my story time after time to numerous 'experts' until finally i got referred for the autism test. finally someone believed me.

that was the day my life changed, i had a name for my problem. unfortunately it has no cure, i'm like this for life. but once you know what it is you can control most of the bad things that set you off.people with autism can seem absolutly normal or seem absolutly not normal. depending on so much. for me the thought of going to a doctors apointment or just to the shops can be so bad i throw up and dont go or i'm fine this day and just go. sitting in waiting areas are super uncomfortable, christmas time shopping is terrible. when shopping i have my list and i can be in and out so fast you would call me 'the flash' if i have my sister in law with me she says 'dave, slow down, i cant keep up!' i buy most of my clothes online so i dont have to go into shops. my postman is very good, delivers without questions lol.

ive never done just about everything other people do, never been in a mcdonalds, never had a meal at a pub, never been to a sporting fixture, never been to a concert or to the ficks (i have literally thousands of DVDs) never been on a solo holiday, we did holidays when i was a kid but id stay in the caravan most of the time.

i dont miss these things.

i am what i am, and i'm happy. (most of the time)

Both YouFoodz and Light n Easy seem to have the same delivery packaging - a big foam box with freezer bricks in it....and this I find a sore trial to get into the house and even move when empty.  I'd taken to following the YF delivery tracking down to the last minute to ask the driver to bring the box inside.  Sometimes he would be too quick for me and escape. 🙂

I unpack my box on the front verandah and take the meals inside. The box stays on the verandah till the next pick up/delivery.

I hate polystyrene so I don't move it anywhere!

Re: meals on wheels vs light n easy

i was just thinking about the moving the large box if you have problems lifting heavy items and maybe a simple laundry trolley, the ones designed for laundry baskets, could be of use. have it on your porch and the guy plonks the box on it and you can just wheel it inside.

might not work but a trolley of some sort would work if you dont have stairs.

I don't have a front verandah, just a few steps leading up to the door which I can no longer manage.  (I have plans to have a ramp built but it's one of a long list of tasks to be done).

I get the box left at the back door where there is a small ramp but I need to have the screen door wedged open with the box which is then sitting on the ramp.  In any other position it's just too heavy to move into position to get it in the house. My worst nightmare is someone leaving the box on the ramp....with the screen door firmly closed.  Then I can't open the screen door to get outside to retrieve it!  I can't pick it up as I use a walking frame to get around.  I provide clear instructions for delivery but it's amazing how often they don't bother to read it.  That's why ambushing the YF delivery guy is my best bet.

day 4, Crumbed Chicken Breast with Potato Wedges

i'm having trouble finding fault with these dinners

again this one looked great after heating, the vegies were fresh and crisp not soggy.

even the potato which often tastes strange when its been frozen tasted pretty much normal.

i think it might be a cardboard container, it doesnt let water build up inside while cooking.

MOW meals often after cooking are full of water in the bottom of the tray.

Re: meals on wheels vs light n easy

i will be reordering.

mind you i do realise these dinners will never be 'just like a home cooked dinner' cooked by a half decent cook, you just cant put a real meal in a packet and freeze it, transport it, reheat it and have it as good as new.

and they sure wont be anything like a meal in a pub or resturant.

but for me they fill the gap.
