"It's Not Even a Debate"!

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has claimed the date of Australia Day should not be changed despite fierce debate over the issue in recent years.

Many Indigenous leaders have been pushing for the date of Australia Day to be moved from January 26, the date that marks the First Fleet landing in 1788 and the beginning of British colonisation.

A new survey released by the Institute of Public Affairs on Monday said despite the debate, 71 per cent of Australians were in favour of keeping the date as is.

The poll found the 71 per cent believe “Australia has a history to be proud of” and “Australia Day is an authentic way for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to celebrate being Australian”.

On Monday morning Sunrise breakfast show co-host Samantha Armytage grilled Mr Morrison over whether he agreed with the results of the poll or if he thought the date should be changed.

A report by the Australian Conservation Foundation shows just how committed the government is to giving a “hand up” to one of Australia’s most profitable, and environmentally destructive, industries.

According to the ACF analysis, the mining industry is set to receive $2.5 billion in fuel tax subsidies this year.

Gina Rinehart is Australia’s richest person. Her wealth nearly doubled last year – from $10.7 billion to $20.9 billion. Her fellow mining magnates enjoyed similar success.

In the year to June, mining industry profits grew by $27.7 billion. BHP Billiton made $7.4 billion, Fortescue Metals Group reaped $2.7 billion, and Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting made just over $1 billion. Rio Tinto’s 2016 profit was $6 billion, and in the first half of 2017 it made $5 billion.

You didn't even read the information published by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade did you ?

If you had, you would have seen Coal is Australia's largest export commodity BASED ON DOLLAR VALUE......

If the numbnuts people responding to this thread cant even read and understand the information provided in links from highly respected government agencies, Ive got better things to do. Over and out for this thread.

I will make it a little easier for you

If I sell

widgets on ebay for 1 million dollars gross and net 1 thousand dollars profit

but also sell

doodads on ebay for 5 hundred thousand dollars gross profit and net 100 thousand dollars

Which product is more important to my bottom line?

Which product in gross figures BASED ON DOLLAR VALUE is my biggest seller?

Re: "It's Not Even a Debate"!

"There has been A LOT  of trash talking about Coal mining on this forum from Labor supporters. Fair enough, the stuff is contributing to climate change and if people want it banned for that reason it sounds reasonable at first glance. But here's the kicker. In 2019 Coal overtook Iron Ore to become Australia's largest export commodity. As well as generating the bulk of our electricity it also contributes around 16% of Australia's income.

This raises a very simple and very genuine question.

Are the regular contributors to these forums who oppose coal mining willing to accept a 16% reduction in their wages / social security payments / standard of living plus a tripling of their electricity bill on top of the 16% reduced income in order to have coal mining and exports banned ? And lets not forget forcing the closure of what is left of our manufacturing industry forcing tens of thousands of families onto unemployment benefits.

Because that is precisely what opponents of the coal industry are arguing for."

The above is utter rubbish. Misleading b/s and you know it, chamo.

You have refused to explain how (even if the coal industry in Oz collapsed completely)  why this would lead to a reduction in social security payments (it wouldn't) - a trippling of our electricity bill? why? and how?

You're just making this up. you are being duplicitous.

It is you who should apologise for writing such party-political fiction.

Why duplicitous?

It's just commonsense. Fossil fuel mining exports are a huge contributor to the Aus economy. If we were to close it down, it would put a lot more people out of work than just the miners.

Businesses and industry not only can't operate with unreliable power from renewables, it would be simply be unaffordable, and they would either move offshore or close down, throwing thousands out of work and onto social security. And how is the government going to pay our welfare bill, not to mention our trillion $ foreign debt without the revenue generated by mining?

Even if we did bite the bullet and closed down ALL of our fossil fuel mining, it would make barley a blip in world emission reduction.

Buying windmills and solar panels and installing them on land that in many cases would probably have to be resumed from landowners would be a huge drain on any country's economy. Especially if renewable power generators are being subsidised by government, as in Aus.

These costs would have to be passed on to the consumer, and would be unaffordable to the average households, especially if no-one's got a job.
