he used the old 'some of my friends are aboriginal' excuse!

And even though no malice meant, surely he can see it being sensitive to some.
I can't phathom how celebrities, media, higher positioned people don't learn to keep their mouth shut at inappropriate thoughts.
Yes that's true. You can't be too careful , you have to triple-think everything you say,
So much for freedom of speech...
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. If a person has said something insulting or stupid others have the right to use their freedom of speech to criticise and call you out on it. Speech is an action, actions have consequences.
There has never been absolute free speech in Australia, nor should there be. We've always had defamation laws, laws based on the idea that there will be consequences if your speech harms others
Sorry, but that means there is no "freedom of speech" in Australia. In other words say what you're allowed to say, othewise, suffer the consequences.
I see we haven''t moved forward much from British colonialism...

Some of us may presume that because we live in a liberal democracy like Australia, certain personal freedoms are a given โ like free speech โ and that any imposition on a personโs speech would be viewed as an attempt to curtail the freedom.
Additionally, weโre going to presume (for the sake of the topic of this piece) that many Australians would be familiar with the US Constitution and specifically the First Amendment which states; โCongress shall make no lawโฆ abridging the freedom of speech, or of the pressโฆโ, and weโre going to also guess (again for efficacy) that some people may believe that we here in Australia also enjoy a similar type of Constitutional protection: But do we? Wellโฆ it must be said that Australiaโs free speech laws are interesting to say the least.
First, letโs get the easy part out of the way: Australia does not have an explicit First Amendment equivalent enshrining the protection of freedom of speech in our Constitution. So where does this leave us? Well, it wasnโt until 1992 in Nationwide News Pty Ltd v Wills and Australian Capital Television Pty Ltd v Commonwealth (ACTV) 177 CLR 1 where the issue of free speech was significantly dealt with.

Australia does not have explicit freedom of speech in any constitutional or statutory declaration of rights.
Freedom of speech may be upheld in the US but that's not the case in Aus.
That's the main reason why people get sued over here as you can't just say whatever you want as seems to
be the case in the US and most people tend to confuse it as us having those same rights when we don't.
The only ones protected are politicians.

We have the right of opinion and expression but that's different to speech.

Hate and racist speech is a crime in Australia
The only one that wants this sort of speech are White Supremacists which I class as Terrorists

How strange, I've never had to triple think any joke before repeating it in public. I just ask myself 'if I were the butt of this joke, would I find it hurtful?' If the answer is 'Yes' then I don't tell it.
I think that's called common poiteness or good manners..
