They already have fought back. Masks were compulsory in certain situations in Wisconsin but a few months back, it went to court and the state's regulations were ruled unconstitutional.
I believe they faced similar issues about seat belts decades ago.
What I have found is that people don't like being told what to do but if it is a reasonable request and they can see the sense in it, most people come to terms with it.
For example, you won't get too many people arguing that we should be allowed to choose what side of the road we drive on. We can see the danger, not to mention hold ups, if everyone could drive wherever and however they pleased.
I can remember something from my teaching days too. Back in about 1994, our prin made the school uniform compulsory. This was a state school. There were rumblings of discontent from the parent body. I have school photos from that time and about 85% of the kids were not in uniform. Fast forward just a few years and that figure rose to 100%. And no problems with it. It helped that the uniform was comfortable, smart, allowed for a lot of flexibility and was very reasonably priced.
With masks, I think most people would be prepared to fall in line and wear them in crowded places such as shopping centres, public transport etc. But the majority probably won't bother unless it is a regulation.
I am in Melb and I can promise you that before covid really took over, but when numbers were rapidly rising, we were only seeing about 10-15% of people with masks. Once it became compulsory, that overnight became 99.9%.
So if it is unconstitutional to institute measures for general health and safety, maybe the constitution needs to be tweaked. I believe in Melb it was emergency powers for state of disaster and so on. Hopefully the new pres can make the measures stick but I would question if he has even gone far enough. Masks during travel isn't going to do much good if people aren't wearing them any other time.
