Damaged item, ordered as a guest

I have an eBay account but for time-saving at the point of purchase, I only ordered as a guest. I received an item (The Love Boat Season 1 Volume 2 DVD) today, that has part of the plastic seal  ripped and a visible gouge on the cardboard slip that sits over the case itself. From the feel of it, it also feels like the case is affected in some way (but apart from the ripped section of plastic flapping at the front, the rest of the DVD is fully sealed so I have been unable to confirm this). The envelope it was sent in shows no signs of damage and the postman here delivered it to my door, so I believe that this case was already damaged before it was posted. I bought this as a Christmas present and spent a fair amount of money purchasing it, so I would like to know what the next step is.

It depends on how you paid.....did you use paypal or did you pay directly to the seller's merchant facility?

Regardless of how you paid you should contact the seller first and only if they are not helpful should you think about opening a dispute.
