So i just got of the phone to Australia Post and I am absolutely gobsmacked I just got told that the items I post mainly little punchie packs should be sent as a parcel and not in a standard envelope which are apparently strickly for documents and letters has anyone else heard of this my items i send generally are not even that big they are tiny and a letter would be thicker .... They said I should be sending them as a parcel ....

LOL...aren't they made of paper? I even post small clothing items in the envelopes...just have to disguise them ( I make pockets out of the junk mail and send them in that) as long as they're not business-size envelopes they don't go through the sorting machines.

Keep sending them as letters, the backlash from customers is awful if they think you could send their "parcel" cheaper.

Well what you were told was wrong.
The guidelines for a large letter are;
http://auspost.com.au/personal/standard-delivery.html
Large letters
A large letter is an article which exceeds at least one of the small letter dimensions and has the following characteristics:
rectangular in shape
no larger than 260mm x 360mm
no thicker than 20mm
does not weigh more than 500g.
No mention is made at all of the item needing to be paper or documents

Express or International are restricted to documents, but not domestic.
Alice tried to tell us a few months ago that letters were only for documents, but she didn't respond when AP's own guidelines were quoted to her.

In addition to the information quoted above on the Australia Post website additional information does state the following
What can I send in an envelope?
Only documents should be sent inside regular paper envelopes. Any other items, such as bulky or rigid items, may be torn from the envelope or damaged if not packaged appropriately.

If you go to the AP site and try to get a postage quote in the parcel section, lets say, something 200mm x 290mmx 15mm you will be told that you need to go to the letter section. No if & buts, you will not get a parcel quote for that size envelope as a parcel. I sent small baby articles of closing as letters, but I do put with them bit of cardboard and run sticky tape across and around to make sure it is not going to burst.

That just says they should not be sent in normal envelope, not that they have to be sent as parcels. You can send them in the tough strong envelopes AP sells.

With all due respect Super Nova the OP was asking about standard envelopes
