Beware scam phone calls supposedly from eBay customer support

Hi everyone - I received a telephone call this morning supposedly from eBay customer support. They informed me that 1 of my orders from 3 March has been returned to eBay head Office Sydney.

I have just spent the past 2 hours going through all my sales from March and the end of February, in eBay & PayPal & my webste, but can fnd no order corresponding to what they told me was on the invoice - they couldn't give me the buyers ID and wouldn't give me the address either. They then asked me if I would give them my address so they could return the supposed items to me - I said no.

I have spoken with Customer Support on the phone and they have verified that the call was from them but it came from an agent in the 'back office' and was a courtesy call only - they said that there was no Payment Summary in with the order - not true because I send one with every order that I mail out - that they can't give me the buyers address because that is an invasion on the buyers privacy but that they can ask me for my address because I am a seller.

I was going to close all of my eBay listings and my store at the end of April anyway, but because of this, I have done that already.

Good luck to all that are staying wth eBay, may you have lots and lots of sales - Sandra - downeyas 🙂

Given that eBay don't answer calls at the moment, how did you manage that trick? Did you actually get somebody to answer the phone?

LATEST BUYER SCAMS...... shame I can't use buyer id names but its tempting. Due to covid delays, there have been a number ( about a dozen in 6 months compared to NONE IN 7 YEARS), of items not received.disputes, simply long delays to some areas, buyers open disputes, no tracking as was optional and my low price and profit margin doesn't allow me to pay for tracking. So i have no choice but to refund, knowing full well that their item would have arrived, maybe even the next day. So I decided to increase my prices a couple of dollars and use prepaid envelopes with tracking. These dont track to the actual address, like registered, but you at least have a postcode.

BUT NOW THEY ARE GETTING AROUND THAT. 2 CUSTOMERS SAYING EMPTY ENVELOPES . Simply IMPOSSIBLE , as with these they need to fit through a measuring slot at the post office so ensure between 5mm and 20mm. They are about 10mm (empty envelope would be barely 1mm). Plus they are weighed to ensure not exceeding weight. . Plus the criteria for using is must be still flexible, so I check each one to ensure is flexible. An empty envelope can't happen. So much for tracking. What can you do but refund.
INTERESTING ebay advice for sellers though, ebay later told me that if you have tracking saying delivered, the buyer must prove it was empty ! Which is not possible.
SECOND SCAM... buyer contacted me for a refund but insisted I refund and then she would return, I told her I would happily refund but like all stores she had to first return. Interesting she knew not to open a return dispute. It was a change of mind but I still agreed. So she thanked me and said would send it back but I didn't hear until 2 months later !!!! Ebay informed me she had opened an unauthorised transaction claim with her bank. DESPITE HAVING EBAY MESSAGES ETC with her trying to get a refund and keep it, and despite ebay having order numbers etc, as it was a 3rd party ie bank dispute, they couldnt use any of that nor intervene on my behalf. Bank wanted tracking!!! So she got refunded, kept her s925 charm, , I got an ebay fee of $22 for a bank dispute and I got a defect. Which they removed on appeal due to buyer messages etc proving a lie. I dont feel ebay do enough to protect sellers, they had all the evidence they needed. Better than tracking which may have had no relevance to an ebay purchase even. Its very weighed toward buyers and not enough to support sellers. I later found they could have used messages, as it said so in the charge back help link. They get the goods, the refund and you lose the goods, the money and the fee.
Another buyer did the exact thing. Had over 1700 in purchases on husbands BUSINESS credit card transaction over a 3 month statement. She denied all. Bank opened disputes for EVERY EBAY PURCHASE OVER THE 3 MONTHS. I checked and she had hunfldreds of purchases. So loads of sellers stung..... not just me. Again ebay claimed they couldn't use anything to intervene...... she had even left positive feedback. Again, and she had bought from me on 3 occasions, 3 refunds, 3 kept, 3 ebay fees of $22 each but as there was proof they later removed the defects. So that hit many sellers. Pages of transactions.
HORRIBLEBTHAT YOU CANNOT LEAVE ANYTHING BUT POSITIVE FEEDBACK SO CANT WARN PEOPLE.
I NOW PUT TRACKING ON EVERYTHING, THOUGH FINANCIALLY NOT AFFORDABLE... SO NOW PROOF OF DELIVERY BUT EMPTY ENVELOPES

I had emailed many times over the same problem and despite apparently not currently having phone support, they gave me a 1800 number in my communication. I saved it to my phone contacts. It always answers ! Ps try 1800093577

And these issues relate to spam calls supposedly from eBay CS?

No they don't. They relate to your business model.

Dave will??? Is that reply for me? Ie you are giving the same reply yo many. Its ebay scams in general and its getting out of hand. I think we are all fed up and there's no blog to report ebay BUYERS SCAMS AGAINST SELLERS.... you can't leave feedback so to me and others, somehow people need to be warned of latest ebay scams and how to protect themselves, how buyers can still try to beat the system etc. I wish I had read somewhere that as long as I could proove tracking, a buyer has to establish it was empty. Had I previously known that I would gsve told her to open s future, instead of simply refunding her to prevent same. .
An ebay scam is an ebay scam, be it phone, text, buyer or email. Its system abuse . Nothing to do with my business model..... if that was in reference to my last post . Scamners in general are getting smarter and finding loopholes. We need to be aware of the recent scam trends, to protect ourselves, as eBay, even with clear evidence to the contrary, say they cannot intervene in a bank dispute for not recognised

I replied to you, so 'yes'. In general, if a poster replies to you, it means the poster is replying to you. Generally your last post.

You posted in a thread specifically related to spam/scam calls from eBay. Not about your lack of knowledge of COVID issues. Not your business model not protecting you from scamming buyers. An entirely different issue.

davewill1964. They do have a working customer support number. Ive noticed your comments are all very cynical??? Like they all question the integrity of people who are posting? As you said, this blog is for scam calls...... youve posted nothing related to scams at all? only questioned the integrity of others. Bit odd. They dont advertise the number in a link as they did. Since vovid their call centre staff gave dramatically reduced. Hence the number is only given to ebayers directly, in certain situations where email and chat messages have not been able to assist

You seem to have forgotten how to reply to the person you are addressing.

If the number is only available to select members, why post it?

You might think my responses are cynical, but that is probably due to the fact that I actually understand how eBay works. And don't post off-topic.

And post solutions when questions are asked, rather than off-topic vents being repeatedly posted.

It's easy. Post with tracking. Set your prices to reflect that.

I can't help with bank chargebacks. I've never had one, and I'm not on managed payments.

This thread is not just about ebay scams in general.

If you actually read the whole thread it is about calls that are supposedly from ebay customer support but are not.

As for posting that phone number.....it is against posting policy and will probably be removed when the Moderators are next online.
