'EXTERNAL' Influences on Best Match search results ???

Anonymous

I feel blessed in my particular category because there are never more than 2 pages of search results for the keyword 'termites' in the category 'Pest & Weed Control'.

I am however a bit peeved that a particular competitor is ALWAYS sitting on top of me. He lost his power seller status ( and consequently TRS status ) about 6 months ago through lack of sales.

I believe that there must be another factor 'outside' of the ebay system that is contributing to his prominence in search and it is quite possibly Google advertising.

This may explain why many sellers are finding competitors sitting above them for no explicable reason.

Best match should reflect a seller's performance and product WITHIN the ebay system.

Any thoughts ?

PS I am NOT advertising.

It may be Google advertising, but if they are using the API, it's still an internal influence.

Some info you might be interested in (the key being "Using the BestMatchItemDetails API, you can write applications that help sellers improve the Best Match rank of their listings.")

http://developer.ebay.com/DevZone/best-match-item-details/Concepts/BestMatchItemDetailsAPIGuide.html

You need the technical know-how, but these days a lot of people know some basic programming and coding - others may outsource the development to get something that helps them.

Ghost....

from what little I can understand about API's, are they primarily used to estimate rather than direct. That is, they more 'tweeking' tools ?

'EXTERNAL' Influences on Best Match search results ???

I'm afraid I can't clarify too much more than the info, as it's a little beyond my scope as well, but from what I do know, the API gives access to a much more vast amount of information - data, statistics etc - about sales, performance of top ranked listings, buyer behaviour and so forth, as well as provide the ability to develop applications that interact directly with, and using, that data. (Click and send would effectively use the API to communicate with eBay and retrieve your sales records so that the data can be pre-filled. This is another app that would use the API to determine the results and recommendations in regards to titles and search queries: http://labs.ebay.com/erl/demoto/to?  - the tool basically shows you the popularity and frequency of searches by the individual words in your title, allowing to to possibly create titles with optimum searchability, it was developed pre-Best Match, I believe).

So, while the data can't be manipulated  the API can provide insight and direction to some of the finer details that can affect Best Match - things like order of words in the title and so on, which can have an affect on rankings, although I think it's lower down the scale of priorities and ultimately probably only has a minor influence in saturated categories. Unfortunately, I don't know or understand enough to know the full extent of how the data can be used, or how effective it has the potential to be.

On a sidenote, though, from my understanding of eBay's "Best Listing Practices", listings that have free postage, at least a 14 day but preferably a 30 day no questions asked, money back return policy and a 0-1 day handling time will outperform other, similar listings despite TRS and feedback percentage.

Sometimes, I think it's also better to 'refresh' a listing. With things like sales to impressions also having an impact, if an old listing is at the bottom of the list, IMHO there's no harm in ending it and starting from scratch, effectively re-setting some of the things that could be pushing it back.

Thank you very much Ghost.

I will just copy the competition's title and prefix it with 'Better than...'

Term, f there are only ever two pages of results for your product why are you worried. If a buyer is looking do you really think they will just go for the one on top. NO. They will look at both pages of results for the BEST PRICE.

I'm not so much worried as peeved. I have had some run ins with this guy over the years and it's annoying to see him there and I am also curious as to why.

Just did a search for termintes in that category and you're sitting right at the top, termalert. At the moment, a competitor is above you simply because they're ending in 12 hours. Other than that, a good portion of your listings are the next ones.

Maybe Google does help. It would be interesting to be able to see where people came from to get to your listing so maybe you could even start advertising your eBay listings on other places.
