Are Ebay trying to get rid of the little sellers? I am new to selling, just trying to get rid of some stuff to help pay for decorating my house.
I was lucky enough to sell a piece of jewellery and between Ebay and Paypal, I have paid over $104 in fees, to say that I am amazed is putting it mildly.
I read the fee structure but didn't 'comprehend' just how high the fees would be.
I have also noticed that there are a lot of watchers but they don't buy is this normal?
What can I do to reduce fees and entice sellers to buy?

Ebay is not trying to get rid of small scale sellers, they are in fact encouraging them buy giving them free listings and capped fees.
They are trying to make sure that the medium to large sellers, that is those selling more than 30 items per month, pay a reasonable total fee and if they are providing a store platform it is only chosen by those sellers who have a high enough turnover to make it economically viable.
It says in this book I am reading that by 2065 80% of women will be overweight.
See what a trendsetter I am?

Ebay charges 7.9%...how come then my fees for successfully selling an item for $209, were over $21.00?

The final value fee for non-store holders is now 9.9%. So on an item that was sold for exactly $209, the fee would have been a bit under $21 - if any optional extras were used (eg extra category, subtitle), they may have incurred a fee.

The second largest online auction house in Australia (eBay being the largest), is 100% free for private sellers !! Business sellers pay fees...But for private sellers just selling a few things out of their garage, it is 100% free.

Because they are a pack of thieives.
I just sold a guitar for $530. eBay fee? $54
But that's not enough for them. Buyer pays through PayaPal (owned by eBay). PayPal skim another $14 for an electronic transfer.
Anyone who thinks this is cheap should ask themselves how they's react if their bank charged them that much for a transfer.
Double-dipping theft.
Have cancelled my other listings.

Well yes. You should have read the fine print.
Ill agree the fees can be excessive, but the exact amounts are there for you to see. And the print on them isnt even that fine.
And just between you and me, I think that was a rather intelligent answer, with only a wee bit of smugness.

Because you've bumped a 12 month old thread, and the FVF were different then. And the listing fees and the number of free listings and we never got 100 free listings every second weekend and....
That's part of the reason eBay (or Lithium) should delete old threads. Things change and what was once accurate is often overtaken by circumstance and/or time.
And you are told when you list how much you will have to pay if the item sells, so it shouldn't really be a surprise. Except if it's an auction, in which case you obviously got more for it than you anticipated.
