Express Post Satchels Sydney Metro Only

IMG_20250914_203340_476.jpg

Hey all, I have found a ton of these "Sydney Metro" express post satchels in a deceased estate. I have never seen these kind of satchels before and I don't know if they are still valid. They seem quite old. I'm thinking of selling them. Do prepaid satchels ever go out of date? Anyone remember these particular satchels? My local post office didn't know! Thanks

I just used AI and express started in 1992 and these may be from that era when the destination city  was on the satchel. I don't ever remember seeing them. So that could be stretching the grace period a little.

Grace period suggests  - 2 years - these are ' stated old ' - how damn old.??

I would not consider 2 years old.

They couldn't be that old as they have QR codes on them. I just asked Google and it said QR codes were first used by Australia Post around 2018. The deceased persons place I found them in used to manage a post office so at least they are real! Wish I could ask him 😞

I found this on an old AP site thread. ( referencing  a code on a postage label ) The post was 1 year ago so if true would make the satchel around two years old. Another post on the same thread mentioned it was a specialist service for high volume customers. This might explain why no-one on the forums has seen the satchels before.

" Metro is a seperate service to Parcel Post and Express Post. It’s a next day delivery option for large customers with orders addressed to the same metro city of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. It commenced last year and has been really successful. It’s in the process of being rolled out in Adelaide and Perth too."

I did not notice the QR code using my phone but now on a laptop I can see more. The weight is different then what most of use now but if they are newish you would think the AP rep would have more information. Not sure how you will go using them as they may only be valid within Sydney metro and not to be sent interstate.

The satchels have got METRO NETWORK written on bottom right corner. they appear to be for the Metro service noted in above posts. If correct they are up to two years old.

According to AI,  AP metro service satchells are not prepaid and are not flat rate.

No, Australia Post's Metro service does not use prepaid satchels; instead, it is a dedicated next-day delivery service for businesses within the same city, with postage calculated separately from packaging costs. Metro service involves the use of their business shipping platform to manage sending parcels, and while they offer packaging options, these are not tied to a fixed prepaid satchel cost.

Here's why it's not a prepaid satchel service:
  • Service Focus:
The Metro service is designed for businesses needing fast, same-city delivery, not for general consumers using prepaid mailers.

  •
  • Postage Calculation:
Postage is not a flat rate included with the packaging but is calculated based on various factors, including the destination and delivery speed.

  •
  • Business Platform:
Senders use the Australia Post business shipping platform to arrange and pay for their Metro service shipments, rather than buying individual prepaid satchels.

Good you found what they are Maybe they could turn them inside out and use as a small satchel otherwise garbage bags for the next few years
