why is it that feedback such as "avoid, avoid" or "would never deal with again" is still given a positive rating?
this is incredibly misleading.
I trust and rely on feeback but am beginning to feel very uncertain that is is in fact true.
What is the point of feedback when it cannot be trusted?

I would think the answer above this one sums it up pretty well.
I have never written 'avoid, avoid' on anyone's feedback, nor have I given neutral or negative, even though I am 99.9% a buyer.
But over the last few months, I have added any downsides in with the positives, mainly so other buyers will know the score.
There have been times when some sellers were pretty lucky, I reckon, that I gave them positive, but I pretty much stick to positive if I got the goods (or even when it's only something sort of like the goods, which is what happened with a lot of pots I bought 🙂 )
But you are right, feedback is most useful if it is honest & balanced. Not much use putting completely negative comments and giving a positive.

If it is a negative comment from Positive Feedback and it was left by a seller, the seller needs to be reported to ebay for policy violations.

The policy for feedback removal is that the comment, left by a seller for a buyer with a positive rating, must be sufficiently negative to warrant removal.
What is sufficiently negative ? I reckon pretty much the subjective assessment by the ebay representative that gives consideration to the matter. IMO depending on the nature of the comment, it is not as clear cut as some make it out to be.

If it is a seller who is leaving these false pos comments then it is nice of them to warn you to avoid buying from them as they have no problem breaking ebay rules.
If a buyer was leaving that sort of feedback comment there is no reason they would not have coupled it with a red dot.

I really appreciate all of your comments.
I don't know what a red dot is, nor how to leave one.
yes, I am predominantly a seller, infrequently a buyer.
so, instead of running my eyes down the feedback column looking for anything other than the green positive feedback symbol, I will now need to read it all! Wonderful!
anyway, I guess there is no perfect system, and in general, I have dealt with the most delightful people.
I do however, think that there are some areas that Ebay need to look at more closely.
I recently came up against a dreadful buyer. She said that my item was misleading. Would not give myself or Ebay an explanation of how. I provided 4 well lit, up close coloured photos, a full description, including all measurements - but I was accused of being misleading! I was shattered!! Ebay looked at the photos, description, etc and said that I was completely in the right not to offer a refund. So they did!!! Anyway, she harassed the bejeebers out of them and she got her money refunded because "we like to keep everyone happy". Yes, I did get my money - not the point. How are dodgy sellers/buyers discouraged from behaving so very badly if Ebay just pander to them?

Many years ago sellers used to be able to give negative feedback to buyers resulting in a red dot on the feedback but ebay took that right away along with the neutral feeback. Now only buyers have a range of choices in feedback and sellers can only leave positive feedback. This is unfair to sellers. I believe that sellers should be able to leave negative feedback for buyers that have not completed a transaction and should be able to leave neutral feedback anytime. I would like to be able to see if a buyer is worth dealing with or not. I have had multiple cases of buyers not paying or complaining unnecessarily already this year. It is very frustrating!

So far this year I've had consistent non paying buyers, at least 1 a week, but more often 2-3 per week. The most I can do is block them from purchasing again. This is no consolation, I should be able to give neutral or negative feedback. It is definitely not a fair system when ebay favour the buyers only.
