After having managed payments activated for me today, I have had my first sale.
Item price was $68.00 and postage is $9.95. Total $77.95
Ebay now takes all fees upfront, so according to my the new tab under my Seller Hub, the nett balance due to me is $67.42, which I believe works out at 13.5%. I think this works out the same as when Ebay and Paypal took their different precentages separately?

Of course you would agree. You are not a seller, so you have no idea of what eBay fees are. Even though frequently advertised through the boards.

@cerisesant,
A quick look at other online auction/selling platforms is discouraging. If you have information to the contrary, it would be useful to other sellers to give a quick round-up of that information. However, other sellers have mentioned such fees (comprising such things as Fulfilment by Seller fees, referral fees, listing fees, commission/selling fees, payment processing fees, and where appropriate, despatch/storage fees), and it doesn't appear that the total fees payable by the seller are lower; au contraire.
Etsy might seem to offer lower fees - I understand that the selling fee is 6.5%? - but that is not the only fee involved. There are also the payment processing fees and the listing fees. There are sellers on eBay who also sell on Etsy, and they can speak more authoritatively to that. (However, you need to meet strict guidelines to sell on Etsy; I don't think guitars meet those guidelines.)
Amazon has different fees according to category, and musical instruments attract just one of the fees involved at 15%; payment processing and listing and all of the other fees are on top of that, so it works out to be more than the eBay fees.
I haven't been able to find Kogan's fees listed online. (Am I wrong, or do Kogan provide that information only upon application for registration of a marketplace seller?)
Individuals are best placed to make up their own minds about whether the fees on eBay are worth it, or whether another platform or venue might be better for their particular business or personal situation.
DISCLOSURE: I'm not an eBay seller. Neither (which should go without saying) am I an eBay employee or advocate. I'm just a [economic status undisclosed] girl, some people love me, Galileo, Scaramouche, Figaro, 🙵

I am replying to cerisesant's shock at the the fees incurred on that guitar sale. Quite right for them to express concern. I would too.
BTW: I was selling here back in the day and I have bought, traded and sold highly desirable collectable items via other venues prior to my joining up some 2 decades ago. I think that was before you joined up. Anyway, I was never worried about fees.
But for a guitar sold for $1900 and being charged a whopping $262. My word, that's a hefty chunk!

It's been mentioned a couple of times already that the fees on $1,945.00 at 13.5% comes to that figure.
It's also been explained that the fee structure is not hidden, so a seller should know what to expect if they actually look into the fees.
Of course you would be aware of that if you'd actually read the previous replies - or not..............

Interesting the 13% part. Hmm. Well thanks to the passionate post by , I now "know what to expect" should I start selling again. Kudos to cerisesant for taking the time to come here and share their experience. Others that elect not to comment here for various reasons will be more in the know now.
Well I guess tone depends on how much or how I "actually read the previous replies ".
Man that's still a hefty chunk! 🙄

And advertised. That is the point, the fees are not secret, and any prudent seller would apprise themselves of the costs when setting up listings. By you own admission, you are not a seller, and are therefore unqualified to make any judgement.

Good evening good sir! Yes, sellers will have to be more up on it and know what they're getting in to with big ticket items.

Well good sir, I am not selling at present. I may sell again. You may not remember me as I joined up about a decade (give or take) before you did. I was selling and had a good time, paid fees, got suspended briefly one for forgetting to pay fees. (Blame that on a distracting lady who could really cook). I made a bit of money selling collectables etc.. I know all about selling and fees my good man. I've sold, traded for a long time.
I feel the need to thin out on a few things. I have a collection of rare and vintage pulp books, some of them sci-fi others crime that are not in English. I'll never read them. I may start selling myself on eBay or get someone to do it for me. Thanks to cerisesant's taking the time to come on in and share an experience (this is what it's all about), I'm going to have things in a better perspective for when I start thinning out on stuff.

I'm not an officer. I have never been suspended, because I pay my fees on time. They are even automated, and have been for at least the last 13 years.
If you decide to start selling again, you will undoubtedly apprise yourself of the fees attendant thereto. And the fact that the current fees are ballpark with what sellers have been paying through eBay and Paypal for years.
Be prepared to be disappointed at how much your 'rare' SF will fetch. A lot have been republished, in better quality, over the last couple of decades.

Well that's a different tune that you're playing now. Remember this one from the not too distant past ?
