I am trying to list an item - EBAY will not let me tick just COD and insits on electronic payment methods. I have had nothing but trouble with paypal, and paymate is designed for businbesses. What is an individual meant to do?

because its the rule:
PayPal, Paymate and merchant credit card are eBay's recommended safer payment methods and all sellers are required to offer at least one of these in most categories.
If you want to list your item as cash on pickup, you still have to show paypal
I understand that listing as cash on pickup is a bit tricky - here is a previous help from a poster
PICKUP ONLY
The "proper" way to list is somewhat hidden, (that is, a seller generally has to see and click a link to open up a window for more options, then add the local pick-up only as an option, then save the option, then select it in the postage section - which removes all other postage options - and submit the listing that way. Only then will search results say "Free; local pick-up only).

thanks useful advice. Never have been able to get paypal to work properly. Ebay seem to love to make it difficult for beginners

There is only one reason for Ebay making it difficult. That is so you are basically forced to offer paypal so they make an extra 2.4 or 3.4 % on all sales plus the 30 cents per transaction.

Then again, that is a small insurance to pay for both buyer and seller protection.
Buyer does not receive item - paypal will refund buyer
Seller proves item sent - paypal will honour sale
Item missing - no fault buyer or seller - paypal will issue (buyer) refund from own funds
I guess it all boils down to whether or not selling on eBay (with charges/fee's) is worthwhile or not.
It sure is a lot cheaper than renting a BM store/warehouse or paying agents/reps/staff wages or commissions - but that is just my opinion
