Just realised the FB system is even **bleep**pier than I thought

2 months ago (after 12 years of selling on eBay) something really unusual occurred.

I sold an item retail (last of) to a shop customer, and within 1 hour someone who had an "offer" in the eBay system suddenly changed their mind and coughed up the extra to buy the item after a few days of beating me around the head with low offers.

Obviously the item had walked out the door to a retail customer, I immediately informed the buyer and apologised explaining what had occurred.

The buyer asked if I was getting any more stock in etc - I said no, apologised again, asked to cancel the eBay transaction (they agreed) all over I thought.

The cancellation goes through - then today, 2 months later the buyer smacks me with bad feedback.

I call ebay to complain about my grievance and i'm told - sorry, we understand, but you did "sell" an item you didn't have, you did break the contract with the buyer, you wear the feedback.

(I wonder if they'd consider ringing my unpaid buyers and  quoting the same "sherrif" story to buyers who fail to pay breaking contracts etc.)

Obviously im peeved - but my point to sellers is:

BE AWARE THAT EVEN AFTER A FRIENDLY AND MUTUAL CANCELLATION, THE BUYER STILL HAS THE ABILITY TO BE VENDICTIVE AND LEAVE BAD FB - I foolishly thought that once a transaction was "cancelled" on mutual terms, the buyer basically lost that ability - INCORRECT once again, we as sellers and fee payers to eBay have to take it with a smile as a hot metal rod is once again shoved where the sun doesn't dare shine.

"Quite aside from the fact that following a mutual cancellation the buyer shouldn't have even been able to leave any feedback"

Is this something new ?

Do you have a link to this information ?

I have the option to leave feedback after a mutual cancellation right now.

It's also one of the reasons mentioned in removing a seller's feedback should a buyer leaves neutral or negative feedback after the buyer requested a cancellation.

Removable

Feedback- or DSR-related defects as a result of the following situations:

A buyer requested the cancellation of the sale due to no fault of the seller, and the seller cooperated with the buyer's request.

I am pretty sure that a mutual cancellation does not negate the ability to leave feedback.

The only time feedback can be restricted (generally speaking - eBay can place blaocks at their discression depending on the circumstances) is for a finalized UIC where no payment was made.

Losing Feedback privileges

Looks like you're right crikey and I spoke in error. I based my response on my inability to leave feedback following a cancellation last month after the option to do so immediately disappeared when I agreed to the cancellation request. I thought what happened was based on ebay policy but it now appears that it was some sort of aberration instead.

Taken from the eBay page-

1. On the Reply to Feedback received page, choose the comment and click Reply.
2. Enter your response and click Leave Reply.

Your reply will appear just below the member's comment.

It is good to see both sides of the story so I am glad you want to reply.

Enjoy!

Thank you for that. I replied the best I could with the 80 characters to show my side. Hopefully buyers will take that on board

I think that's a good response. It drops her right in it.

The buyer will not be able to leave any feedback AFTER the unpaid case was closed. This is an automatica system policy.

If she left neg before you closed the unpaid case, she was allowed to do that but then ebay would automatically remove her feedback in a day or two.

If not, there are 2 possible reasons:

1. ebay did not detect the neg. In this case you need to contact / email ebay with the item number and ask them to remove the neg, easy.

2. when you closed the case you accidentally chose "you completed the transaction successfully with buyer..."  If this is the case not only you won't get the sales fees back from ebay, the buyer can also leave you any feedback she likes - bad luck in this case.

The neg was left on the 5th, check back in a day or 2, and see if it's still on your record. Good luck.

Responding to feedback does not help anything, the damage is still done on your seller profile and your buyer won't care how you responded. You must get ebay to remove the neg to clear your name.
