Just noticed that small 500g parcel price when using the eBay label creator has gone up from $8.30 to $8.95.

It's worse than that for me, I was paying $7.55 to send items using eBay 500g Satchels, now they will cost $8.95!
I spoke to eBay, they said they have had a lot of calls about this, but could not give me any guidance at this stage. I've just bought a pile of eBay satchels, but there is no point using them now.

We were paying $7.55 receiving a $1 discount on the old 500g price of $8.55. This morning we were being charged $8.35 and this afternoon $8.95, the full retail price.
Another knife in the guts for small Australian sellers. eBay only wants big Chinese sellers on their platform now.

eBay have created three new rates Local, Metro and Regional price structures which are not applicable to the new Australia Post pricing ??? Australia Post has done away with distance based pricing !

Australia Post has certainly NOT done away with distance based pricing. There are 3 rates - Same City, Metro and Rural. MyPost prices are significantly discounted from standard for same city and metro, but that requires printing a label through the site. Exactly the same as eBay are quoting, sans discounts.
Prepaid satchels have never been distance rated, but anything over 500g non-satcheled always was. Now it's every size if not using pre-paid satchels.

Ive only just started selling on Ebay, does that mean they will get even more money as a commision because of higher postage rates?

Yes.
In that eBay charge fees on the total sales price. Higher price, higher fees.
Build it into your prices. Or wear the extra like those who don't have a lot of wriggle room on their prices do.

I am starting to see ebay makes a bit from postage. 10% on the postage charged plus the 15c without having to deliver a single parcel.

That was okay when eBay gave a significant discount for using their postage system. Which they currently don't do.

I always thought that was the idea to give a discount to compensate for the fee.
