Netflix tax

Just got an email from ebay...

From 1 July 2017, Goods and Services Tax (GST) will apply to fees on eBay.com.au, due to new legislation in Australia (the "Netflix Tax").

Businesses registered for GST will not be affected by this change if you register your Australian Business Number (ABN) with eBay here.

Anyone else feel a fee increase coming to cover this....

Re: Netflix tax

"I'm just wondering how they can charge a GST on p&h."

I'm still wondering how they can charge FINAL VALUE FEES on postage and handling, but let's not go there 🙂

I'm a bit late to this; the message I got today was the first semi-coherent explanation I've received. Forgive me if I'm slow - does this 10% just apply to final value fees, and not to actual item prices (in other words it would be 10% of  roughly 10.9% for a non store-owner, or effectively  1.09%? I can live with that.)

Re: Netflix tax

The final value fees are 9.9%.....you pay 10% GST on that 9.9% which is the 10.9% that ebay is talking about.

Effectively it is a slight fee increase overall but ebay does not keep it...the GST component goes to the ATO.

Recieved the same email again today from eBay informing me they'll be imposing the tax as of July 1st 2017. It's my understanding that the tax has been deferred until July 1st 2018 pending a senate inquiry. I'm hoping eBay is just behind the times but....

Has anyone got any further information about this?

The netflix tax is on digital services - eBay fees in this case. Effective 1 July 2017

The tax on imports of MATERIAL goods has been deferred.

I had to laugh.

There was a post back in this thread to the effect 'finally ebay will be paying tax'.

Ebay won't be suffering any impost at all. Just a whole bunch of Australian

sellers who aren't registered for GST.

Re: Netflix tax

eBay isn't really a monopoly in Australia - if you want to see a monopoly when it comes to online auctions, look across the water to the east where Trade Me is practically the only viable option that In Zid has, the others don't even come close - eBay doesn't even operate over there (yet they do in Ireland, go figure).

Re: Netflix tax

eBay tried to set up over there, I believe, but the Kiwis prefer Trade Me.

Re: Netflix tax

When I first joined qs, or just before, I did a bit of research on what sites were available and found a post that said NZ was one a handful of countries that had ebay but basically booted them out and started their own sites. It was at the time when they tried to enforce pp for all payments. Whether or not it was true I have no idea but that's what I read at the time.

Re: Netflix tax

I'm done with eBay. They should absorb this increase since their fees are already ridiculously high.

Does anyone know if paypal are upping their fees by the gst as well?

It is not a fee....it is an Australian Government tax and has to be paid to the ATO.

GST is paid by the end user...the Australian consumer.

Paypal is not upping their fees as far as has been announced yet.

Paypal is registered as a banking service and there is no GST on bank fees.

Re: Netflix tax

I know how GST works.

End of the day as a private seller, I'm paying 10% more on my fees. paying 10% fees + 10% GST doesn't make me feel any better than paying 11% fees.

I'm looking at other options. eBay have fleeced us enough.
