New US Tariff rules re Country of origin.

Received message from eBay that very soon all items sold into the US market will have new import rules applied.

Sales will have to have country of origin showing and probably other info as time goes on.

But what happens if we don't know where the item was made/comes from originally?

With many sellers offering items that they re-sell after purchasing themselves, therefore not knowing where the item originated, this could be a big issues unless they exempt Vintage/Antique items.

Watch this space.

Anyone care to comment?

New US Tariff rules re Country of origin.

In the most simple terms, if you send something without having the country of origin on the package, from the 29th one of 3 things will happen:

  • The package will be rejected and returned to sender
  • The package will have the highest duty rate applied and charged to the buyer
  • The package will be delayed and a request for the information will be made (but can't be supplied so one of the above two things will ultimately happen)

Antiques (100+ years old) already have special rules and most actually have a 0% rate, but you will still run in to the same problems without a country of origin, especially as some countries have restrictions on the export of antiques, so they are investigated more thoroughly

Items sent to the USA worth less than $US800 have been free from paying any tariffs, but last month President Trump signed an executive order to suspend the duty-free “de minimus” tariff exemption for low-value shipments from all countries.
